I was reading around on the net the other night, and I came across this article that sade some government made some sort of "pain beam"(I know the name is corny). It literally is an ivisible beam that causes pain to whoever it touches. Now, that's scary!(to me at least) what's next? colonizing other planets? War in space? me with a brain? any thoughts?

I heard the US Military were in the process of designing one.. your tax dollars at work?
I'm sure Lazo will be here with the facts soon enough <_>

I think I've heard about this. ..From Lazo... I find it to be quite the interesting idea, and a cool show of where we can go with technology right now. Now if only I could sign my neighbors up for testing the abilities of it.

Ah, you must be thinking of the Microwave Pain Ray. It's called the "Active Denial System" and looks like this: A HMMV with a giant microwave emmitter on it.It fires out waves that are aa sorter of cousin of microwaves, in the 95 GHz range. The invisible beams penetrate just a 64th of inch beneath the skin, which is deep enough to heat up the water inside a person, which is enough to cause horrible pain. The idea is to get the people to run away. Right now it's supposed to be used as a less lethat deterrant for people approching Coalition forces in Iraq. It would go verbal warnings, more verbal warnings, warning shots, pain ray, lethal force. Amnesty international is all mad because they say it could be used as a torture device. They're right. That ain't nothin'. In 2007 the US military is going to test out a combined Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) and Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) combined robotic assault on a city and see how well it does.

So, unmanned attack vehicles. I can see it now. We're setting ourselves up for the stuff that happened before the matrix. Oh, well, can't complain!

Not exactly. As if I remember correctly, UAV's and UGV's are simply remote controlled, they don't make use of AI. That's still somewhat of a touchy subject, mainly because of the many good points that movies and such have put forth.

AI is a pretty interesting subject. Least to me. I think it would be interesting to see what could be done with the AI aspect, as it has quite a few applications. Let's all have conversations with our computers! I've had an interest in this subject for a while, mostly ever since I played this game (Creatures) where you raised little critters that could die and breed and stuff. This is also where I first became interested in Genetics. Hooray.

I find genetics interesting as well. Imagine if someone actually created a twin-tailed fox that could fly.
The ecosystem would be disrupted, and the world would explode
Anyhoo, we're getting pretty advanced lately. I wonder how much longer it will be before the first REAL lightsabre?

They're showing on the Discovery Channel a weapon that can fire literally a million rounds per minute electronically.

Oh, science has gone much farther in the field of weaponry ^^, they have this device that can send out Soundwaves at incredibly high frequencys that can seriously injure any individual that comes in contact with it. here is the awesome part though, instead of regular soundwaves that expand in a circular motion, this soundwave stays in a straight line and doesnt expand outward. If it is pointed at an individual, he will be crying and moaning his heart out from the pain, however, a partner RIGHT next to him will hear nothing, and wonder what the heck is going on.
and then there are vehicles that can "hover" through the process of ion energy which interacts with air molecules, and fuel wouldnt be needed (this hasnt been completed fully yet)

It is a technology like so many others, created with a potentially good purpose but as with anything, it could and will be used in ways it was never intended -- anything good can seemingly be used for a bad purpose, and anything bad for a good purpose.

Like clothing that's 100% stain free?
Or roll down TV screens?
Or cars that run on fire proof feul?

I can see downsides to all your suggestions, Mastar. XD Hmmm, strange. Apparently, I've been too ignorant to stalk the military D= I just hope that no one besides the government gets their paws on it. Now that would be scary technology.

That's still somewhat of a touchy subject, mainly because of the many good points that movies and such have put forth. There are machines like those, such as the Predator and Global Hawk. However due to recent advances, such as DARPA's Grand Challange, where 5 privatly built robots completed a 135 mile course completely on their own, along with the self-righting BigDog (Check the video; a firm kick yeilds one of the most natural movement ever seen from a machine), make different suggestions.

It is a technology like so many others, created with a potentially good purpose but as with anything, it could and will be used in ways it was never intended -- anything good can seemingly be used for a bad purpose, and anything bad for a good purpose. Now that there is what you would put down as a section of philosophy. Very much so actually Graedius, as you commented on the action of humanity using things for either good or bad. Even when their purpose is meant to help our own kind, they can at times be switched just enough for the meaning to no longer make any clear sense. Such subjects as this pain ray are actually not to touchy. From what Lazo has said, it all makes a clear cut view in a certain way. Of course though, we as society do continue to utilize technology to our own means. We are in constant strives to make things better and fit down for our own society. This is how we work in certain moments, without growth of our minds to allow creation of such we would not expand. From weapons to friendly things like inter-global communication, humanity is always on the search for something to better themselves with. Now, these two constructions might seem far apart, yet they were both created for our own benefit. One, to aid us in times of warfare; to simply put a large section of time behind us, to easily work out trouble and end significant numbers. The other is there so we can keep in touch with those that have moved on to other places, allowing interaction to never cease. Building as we do, one can only imagine what will come next and how. No one knows everything that goes on behind closed doors, yet you can always feel certain that there is a motion of some kind. While this ray does seem threatening, it's aspects are used to help ease the burden of battle. Instead of moving in, it is another way to send a warning. Of course, it might exact it's own roots of physical torment, but times could lean on such measures. Since dawn it seems, humanity has tried to better themselves in the battlefield. Even dating back to some of the earliest civillizations that began to bring horses into the fray. Only later to be evolved into something as the chariot by even more seperate civillizations. None can be sure how each came to be the way it is, but they all had aspects in mind that better suited them. It was their way for protection and to guard themselves for the future. As moments gave birth, skills would continue to rise, only to where you are today and for the question that you have asked. Warfare is something that has always been in our blood, when compromise no longer seems neccessary, then we are capable of taking and giving; such as this "Pain Ray" are then brought into the scenario, something to lighten the burdens of death and make the years fall shorter in the hand of our own disregard. As Bathroomrage said earlier in an answer to another post, even our home items are in constant strides. From simple things as TVs, foods, cars, consoles, and even facets of the living world. Of course not everything is exactly needed, yet they do work to make life something easier on everyones shoulders. Of course, with such consequences of our physical attributes will begin to show. You can not ignore the bane of labor for to long. However, they are not only there to make things simpiler: they in way are prizes to the troubles we have overcome for generations. Yet this is a smaller point, but looking at them one can only wonder of what culture such designs had first sprung from. When returning to the normal features though, at times we bring them forth to clean things up, such as Mother Earth herself. The less we pollute the more chance of survival is giving. Pollution is just another consequence for our industrial gape that we have obtained. But never forget the factors that technology have brought in the positive influence as well.

I don't mean to be rude, contention, but a bit long-winded, isn't it? Anyway, another possibility of scary tech. is aliens. Who knows what kind of stuff they could have? I wonder if there's a mirror race out there right now, with exact duplicates of us, wondering the same things right now?

Aliens..now there's a discussion that could go on and on and on, no one's really sure if they even exist, and the number of theories is staggering.

Space goes out into different galaxys and earth can't be the only planent to have water in a space that goes out for, like... ever. No, not on mars or pluto, somwere really, really far away! I leik aliens. :3
