I said I was going to try this again and by Xenu I'm going to give it a shot. Considering some people showed interest in a tourney last time, I'm hoping those people will express interest here again.
It's been far too long since a bunch of us YCers ripped up ZSNES or whatever it was and had a riotous time. These community events are no bad thing, right? I'm pretty sure a sizeable portion of people enjoy the vidya gaems here - ie: everyone - so what better idea then a tournament?
As before, the platform we'd most likely be using would be emulation via ZSNES using the netplay functionality. Don't complain that you can't run SNES emulation, I was running it just fine years ago on a 166MHz Pentium 1 with no 3D acceleration. Frankly, if your computer has more processing power than a sack of wet laundry, you're good to go.
Of course none of this is final yet, so this topic will serve as an ideas repository until more details can be ironed out. In terms of games, an idea I was throwing around the chatroom was Kirby's Avalanche. It's easy as anything to pick up because its a colour matching gaem and we all know how easy they are. Also for you keyboard wranglers, don't get into a mess over complex controls because you'll only need around 5 or 6 buttons, maximum. And 4 of those are going to be the arrow keys.
I'm open to suggestions regarding game ideas. Try to keep the ideas open to everyone, as complex games that aren't easy to pick up in a short space of time really won't work very well in this situation. I'm inclined to say that includes Pokemon, too.
A word of warning: Absolutely NO discussion of where to obtain game ROMS whatsoever. This will all be taken care of in due course so don't worry about that. ZSNES netplay will also be explained in more detail closer to the time.
