It's a good idea, but most people are usually to shy or don't know what to say when they join a board. Usually it depends upon the time you have, and sometimes boards require to you to feel out a application in your welcome thread. It's fun to do, but its also time taxing and can be annoying. Of course, you could use one as a "if" option, but either way it does get tiring.
