Well, aside from playing music and such, another hobby of mine is learning languages. Currently, I'm teaching myself Chinese and Korean, although I've been really submersing myself with Chinese people in order to get a better grasp of the language, especially since I now work at my Chinese school I used to attend as a student. So far, I'm capable of writing several hundred Chinese characters using Traditional script, speak very little of Chinese Mandarin ( Taiwanese Mandarin more than Putonghua / Mainland Standard Mandarin). I'm also capable of reading and writing Korean Hangul, and due to my Chinese studies, have a larger grasp of Korean Hanja surprisingly more than the average native Korean speaker (which goes to show how tuned out Chinese characters are in Korea nowadays). But before all of this, I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, and I had a love / hate relationship with it. If only I had more friends to practice speaking Spanish with, and would ultimately become fluent in Spanish, I'd be totally happy with that and probably wouldn't go so far into Chinese or Korean. However, if I were to be raised perfectly bilingual in Tagalog and English (I'm Filipino, by the way), I would've probably not bothered with so many other languages now. My goal is to at least become perfectly bilingual in ANYTHING. I also have an interest in German and, recently, French, but learning those languages will have to be on hold once I can somehow clear Chinese and Korean out of the way probably several years from now. Anyway, what kind of languages are you all into that's not your first? Have any of you guys submerged yourself into a language you're fascinated with? Tried teaching yourself, or gone so far as to seek a private tutor?

I took French for 3 years in middle school, into high school. I took it long enough to score well on the NY Regents exam, but I wasn't interested enough in it to pursue it further. Now I've fallen completely out of practice, but I'd kind of like to pick it up again someday.

Spoken languages fascinate me to no end. While I'm interested in one day learning languages such as German, Italian, French, maybe Spanish (the former three because of my ethnicity and the latter just to complete the Romance Language trio), I'm more interested in learning how languages work. I know a few things regarding linguistics, but I'd like to have a more detailed understanding of it.

Huh. Well, I took two years of Spanish but never had.. that much of an interest in it.
And I've been trying to.. self teach myself Korean. That's rather difficult because I lack any sort of book or actual authority to tell me what I'm doing wrong, but I can't say I've gotten far in that. In fact I haven't memorized all the characters yet..
And though it's currently at a hiatus, I used to teach myself Japanese, but I loaned my friend the I used book and I just help her with it every now and then.. I have yet to actually.. study those characters and I don't even want to touch kanji for a while.
Eventually, I want to learn Russian or German.. Unfortunately my school never offered German, so that's the only reason I took Spanish. But I really enjoy listening to those sorts of languages for no explained reason, so maybe I don't exactly want to speak it as opposed to just understand it.

English all the way.
Nah, I'll be serious, the only languages I ever learned were through school. I learned basics in French, but I was never good at it, and I know more in German, but since I've barely used the language in practice since school, I've forgotten most things.
I'd love to learn Latin.

Let's see... I took Latin for three years (which I quickly forgot because I hated my teacher, but i'm sure I can remember it again) and two years of Spanish. I am really hoping I can take a class in Japanese soon!

I took french for three years, did well in all the lessons, good marks on tests, and passed the GCSE with an overall A grade. I was told I did especially well in the oral part of the exam.
Never spoke a word of french since.

No you would not D: I've learnt a bit of Russian, German, Drench and Latin. Can't remember any of it. Honestly my grasp of English is barely good enough to start learning languages from countries where it'd be easier to say what I want slower, louder and with pointing.

Sawatdee khrap.
Ban co khoe khong?
I know very, very little Thai; it should've been my first language, but, well... It didn't work out. DX I've been thinking of self-teaching myself Thai but I don't even know where to start. I have a friend who's been trying to teach me Vietnamese with some success.

Thai seems pretty interesting, but it kind of scares me because of how tonal it is. I'm not very good at memorizing tones, and it's hard enough for me in Mandarin. I have a friend who's half Chinese, half Thai (he's the first person to ever teach me Chinese), and he told me a bit on how Thai works. Apparently, every space is a new sentence, if I remember correctly.
The writing isn't exactly pretty when it's printed, but handwritten Thai looks fascinating and beautiful. Ever tried looking at your receipt with your written order after eating at a Thai restaurant?

I'm fascinated with German and Latin, though don't really have the drive to learn either. Once tried to self-teach myself Japanese (using an SD Gundam Generations F SNES ROM), but that didn't work so well. Maybe someday I'll learn another language. I have some Spanish knowledge, so I guess that's pretty cool too.

I tried to learn spanish in school, but it didn't last long.
I also tried to learn Japanese on my own time, but I got lazy and forgot everything over time.
I also had learned a little bit of tagalog on my mission, from a Filipino friend that I had made on my mission. He mostly just taught me insults. Good times.
I need to pick myself up and actually learn another language though, for it would be very useful.

I have a working knowledge of Spanish, although not a spectacular one.
Outside of that, Polish and Armenian are two languages that intrigue me.
