Merging the fanbases together doesn't seem like a bad idea, but I can't really see the other main forums - YAF, YLore, I don't really know of any other active ones - really going for it, especially not YAF considering the... colourful history we've had in the past. Although I suppose if both sides are willing to bury the hatchet (not in each other preferably) it could work if we merged under a general sort of Nintendo-Board-But-Still-Console-Curious Board. I know a few people around here are more XBros then Nintendo fans these days, in any case.
I don't know about trashing the old topics though, maybe move everything over onto an archive sub-board if we were going to do that? 6+ years is a lot of history to get rid of. Unless of course that's what you meant, then that could also work. I think the Filing Cabinet was meant to preserve good threads but ended up as a Secret Satan repository and a pile of crappy threads made by crappy trolls.
If by some circumstance we did end up merging boards together, we'd probably have one new megaboard so old threads wouldn't be a problem. Still though, I think we're better off sorting things out over here first than trying to do things over on other boards.
Trackmania could work for tourneys, it'd work like time trials, wouldn't it? As far as I know it doesn't need a supercomputer to run it either and it's also free, which is always good.

Thread necromancy sounds like a decent idea. It's not good though, when someone goes into a thread, reads the topic, and realizes that what he wanted to say has already been said by members in the past. New threads would be better, in my opinion. Well, Yoshi's Corner did do a Secret Santa last year. It worked pretty nicely. Now, Merging the fanbases together doesn't seem like a bad idea, but I can't really see the other main forums - YAF, YLore, I don't really know of any other active ones - really going for it, especially not YAF considering the... colourful history we've had in the past. Although I suppose if both sides are willing to bury the hatchet (not in each other preferably) it could work if we merged under a general sort of Nintendo-Board-But-Still-Console-Curious Board. I know a few people around here are more XBros then Nintendo fans these days, in any case. This was discussed in YAF before. We're just as unsure as all of you. I think a good number of us would go for it though. There are some YAF members who would really like to merge, and there are others who want activity and would go for it if it generated activity. Is a merge possible? I know Soul still pays to keep YAF up and running. Someone here must pay for Yoshi's Corner too. I can't tell what would come from a physical merge, or even how to graph two forums full of old threads and different boards together. If the members of both forum could make accounts on both forums and actually visit YAF and Yoshi's Corner regularly, we could make some activity and test if the two mix well. To explain to you what I mean by "mix well", I'll say that YAF often gets members who are under 13. Yoshi's Corner has many members who are over 18, and while YAF does too, there's no telling what will happen if the two started to cross each other. I'm not sure about this, but does anyone know about some of the YAF members, like Mr. Rage, MISS LOATHING, or A. Crimony, MD? Hey, is anyone here actually Mr.Rage, MISS LOATHING, or A. Crimony, MD? Still, it's an interesting though. Good idea bringing it up, Dama.

I agree, I don't want to delete all the old topics. There have been times when I'll go back and read the old topics. It brings back memories haha. I used to be a member on another message board where the admin accidentally deleted all their old topics. No one was really active on the message board, but when that happened every one got all upset about it.
Anyways, I'm agreeing with a lot of the suggestions here. A tourney type thing would be a good idea. I'd probably only be able to participate in DS or Wii games though. But that's just me, I'm sure a tourney with PC games would help make the board more active too.
I'm fine with an art trade that's more frequent than once a year, but I probably would only participate in the secret santa one. I'm not really an artist, and I wonder if other people who don't draw much would do the same. So we could try it, but I don't know how successful it would be. Unless I'm the only person here who can't draw, then that's just fine. =P
EDIT: I also don't think merging with other communities is a bad idea. I just don't know how that would work, like YoshiAgent just said.

What I propose is a board reboot. Remove all the old topics and start anew. It'll give people new things to talk about, get rid of thread necromancy, and clear out the cluttered boards of year-old, never touched topics. ...What? I don't even understand the _logic_ of that one. I proposed thread necromancy as a solution, not a barrier. Purging the board's topics is a really bad idea because not only would it show we have no respect for the history of the community ( I care about stuff like this... don't know about the rest of you), but we would also be shooting ourselves in the foot because we would basically become this empty forum that might be a turn off to some people. And if that attempt at gathering more activity fails (it probably will if we go with that idea), well... oops, can't undo the damage! I mean, Yoshi did bring us together, but while some of us have moved on to other interests gaming seems to keep us tied together. It's a broad topic, but it's still one that links us all. Maybe we need to drop the Yoshi overtones and simply become a community founded around gaming. So basically, you pointed out that Yoshi was our common ground, that it linked us together, and that now we should unlink? Huh? If Yoshi's Corner were "Gaming Corner", would I have come here? Probably not. I came to this place because someone in another community linked to a comic on deviantArt called "unyoshi story", which, for me, rekindled interest in a childhood hero of mine. I crawled dA a bit more, found AnjilYoshi's profile, which linked to this place. I was actually pretty lucky to come here when the place was fairly active, so I decided to stick around. It's been over three years, and I once left at some point, mainly out of spite for the community somewhat veering off the track... but then I returned, because I know this community deserves better. I intend to stay faithful to Yoshi's Corner. It has been, currently is, and (hopefully) always will be centered around Yoshi. That's why I'm still around. If you want a hard shift in central subject matter, you are going to lose some people. That's just how it goes. Again, the issue isn't about Yoshi, it's about the people. You should respect those who came to this community for its original intent and purpose. And besides, there are literally hundreds- if not thousands- of generic gaming communities out there. Do we really need to form yet another?

Blitzzo: I'll be blunt here. Not everyone cares as much about Yoshi as some of you do. In fact, most of us have grown up past that, but don't wish to leave the community because *gasp* we like the people here. If anyone's driving off potential activity and such, it's the purists who refuse to move on. Then again, I suppose I could just move on and find myself another board, which in light if your little post seems easiest.

I guess I should apologize for the nature of my previous post. I hadn't intended to start controversy. I'm just looking for solutions. We all are.
I don't want to force everyone to don a Yoshi avatar (YAF tried stuff like that, and it looked silly). Really, far from it. A lot of people here are about general gaming, which is fine. I'm not trying to put down those people at all. At the same time, though, I can't really see how Yoshi gets in the way of that.
If you think I'm going about this the wrong way, then feel free to speak your mind.

Times like these make me wish that the fanbases would just merge together. What I propose is a board reboot. Remove all the old topics and start anew. It'll give people new things to talk about, get rid of thread necromancy, and clear out the cluttered boards of year-old, never touched topics. That would be basically shutting the site down, don't think too many would bother to start from scratch, if any.

I don't think that changing to, say, a general gaming board would be the right way to go about it. We already have subforums that go into other areas of interest, like Other Art and General Gaming Stuff, and having those doesn't necessarily jump the activity up. Changing the theme of the board would only throw away what brought us all here in the first place. And while it's always nice to have new members, it's not that we don't have a lot of regulars coming here everyday, it's just that they're not posting. Having new members come may generate new topics, but if the old members still don't reply, the new ones will leave.

I don't think changing the board is a good idea. There is already gaming as a sub theme to it. But what makes it special is the love for Yoshi.
Maybe if you could have some sort of contest or just event going on. I know when I joined there was the "Yoshikenitis" thing and that was hilarious and kind of had something we could all make fun of.

Oh gosh... I remember Yoshikenitis. XD I thought that was hilarious. I think it was bugging some of the other members though. =P

Who could forget about Yoshikenitis? Hahaha, good times. Even though there were some things that got somewhat out-of-hand with that, it showed a livelyhood and a carefree friendly atmosphere that, to me, represents the "good ol' days" of the Y.C.

I noticed that in that thread someone said that Timyoshi keeps the site running but doesn't interact with its members. He doesn't... so IF a merger were to be considered, those resenting him on YAF wouldn't have to worry.
Also, reading that topic made me think... I think it would be better if we changed our news fader. If I were a prospective member, and I saw that the forum's news said that the forum was pretty dead, I wouldn't join.

How many people from YAF have seen this topic? What kinds of things are they doing over there to stay alive? At least they tend to hold occasional polls and topics on current events...
Edit: I'm fine with a merger, myself.
teh_yoshi runs this place now, so maybe we could get word from him on how (if?) we should go about this.
Edit 2: I think I recall once briefly discussing the future of YC with him. I think the main concern was that one of the boards would have to be abandoned, and that we would lose lots of community history. Personally, I don't really see how it couldn't be turned into a museum of some sort.
Or maybe it might be better for us to simply join the other community's board and see where that takes us. We could then work from there.

I don't think a Nintendo game release is going to have any kind of effect on the activity of forums, it's members who make it all up.
For example, Earthbound/MOTHER series hasn't seen a new game for years but the fan base is still active and lively because they are dedicated, loyal and active.

He bought the domain and hosting as a package? You can get those separate, you know... for a bit, I was actually sort of thrilled that they had an adequately descriptive domain name.
But it does seem strangely convenient the way things are turning out.
Edit: Wait, no, I was assuming they were still using 2yr.net or whatever it was called for a domain name. At least they still have a sane domain to fall back on.

I think that Yoshi is an old and tried topic. I mean, Yoshi is only a character. How much can you really say about him? Once you get past the whole, "yeah, loved Yoshi, loved the games he was in," point, there's not much more you can do about him. I don't think anyone here has stopped liking Yoshi, but I think we should encourage diverse topics and interests. There's a Digimon board I still go to long after the point where I'm young enough to enjoy the show simply because it's just become a general chat board that my friends and I still care about posting on. We're actually really active - more active than here.
I'm all for role plays and art stuff, though. The other stuff isn't really my kinda thing, but I think they're good ideas.

All I have to say is that I sure missed out on a lot. This place has a lot of history and seeing how there's members who joined way back in 2004-2006....just wow. The good ol' days of YC, "Yoshikenitus," Secret Santa, Yoshiken's wedding (shoot! I had nothing to do that day AND I live in San Diego. Would've been nice to meet new people). Seriously though...WHERE WERE you guys all these years? I only found this forum through a random google search that happened to display a single post here. I searched "Yoshi fan forums" whenever a new Yoshi game came out and I never saw this forum before. I wish I knew about this place back then. Alright...my rant is over move along...
