<WARNING! RANT AHEAD!!!>
Okay, so I've been noticing a trend in society for the past... i dunno, 15 years of my 20 in existence, that has REALLY begun to tick me off. (No worries, I have flipped the "CENSOR" button in my brain, no foul language here.)
Okay, in SIXTH grade I was introduced to the world of anime thru two things... 1.) Pokemon, and 2.) Sailor Moon, YES SAILOR MOON! >:O Around this time frame anime wasn't all that big in the US, in fact most people didn't even know what the heck it was. I LOVED it! I thought it was so cool the way emotions were expressed thru big eyes, and all the crazy chibi (a.k.a "super-deformed") faces. Now, being the kid I was, and loving to draw as much as I did, I practiced and practiced in an attempt to come up with my own way of drawing anime. (There ARE different styles people, don't base everything off what you see on the WB...)
All that leads me up to this... the more popular it became in the US, the more there are these people shunning it, simply because it's mainstream... this is ridiculous, and I don't mean just for anime... I mean for games, books, clothes, cliques (i.e. emo kids, they are still people too!), and such. They are so afraid that they are going to be "just like everyone else" that they don't even TRY the things they shun...
When it all comes down to it, it's the PERSON that defines who you are, not what you're interested in... honestly, grow up just a little...

Welcome to society, where you lose your individuality if you try to be individual, when in the grand scheme of things, all you have to do is your own thing.

It's a double bluff that everyone thinks works.
"Hmm, everyone likes X, so if I DON'T like it, I'll be different and not on the bandwagon!" A lot of people try this.
I'm still waiting for the person with the brainwave of "Hmm, everyone is not going to like this because everyone likes it, so I'll like it to show I'm individual from the hating bandwagon, BRILLIANT!"

Yes. I can't agree more. I don't like anime, but that's me. I mean, I tried all different animes for a month or 2, couldn't find anything, so why should I pretend to like it? Why should anyone pretend to like/hate anything? With all these buttmunchers that hate mainstream stuff because it's mainstream. It's just a faze. What happens when everyone hates it all of a sudden? Will that person try it then, and like it? It's stupid, and I give you permission to slap and maim these people.
I mean, you can like it, and be yourself. Aurgh, I just don't get people...
You know what, for bringing this up I'm going to give you gift art. Or a hug.

Yeah I agree. Just cause it's liked by a lot of people doesn't necessarily have to mean that it's overrated and bad. Sometimes things are liked by a lot of people for a pretty good reason. You never know if the thing everyone seems to like is good. Just try it out, and if you like it, well that's fine, and if you don't like it, at least you have a better reason than just "oh I don't like this because everyone likes it and I wanna be different and the rebel".

I'm sorry, but I just... don't like anime. It's just the way I am. The chibi faces really rub me the wrong way, and there's something about the overall artwork and crazed characters that I despise. Hybrid people animal things just get on my nerves for the most part nowadays. You can label me childish, because those are the kind of cartoons I like- you know, Looneytoons and Scooby-Doo and stuff. Anime just creeps me out.

Anime was never really my thing.
But I see what you're coming from, though (granted that you're talking about things in general and not pointing only at anime). I try to be myself, but most of the time I end up trying to find a balance. Bandwagons come alive for a reason, obviously, because it's well liked by so many. It has to be a good thing for many people, right? For me, I either like it or I don't, but the fact that such and such belongs to some bandwagon shouldn't affect my decision to act on it or not. Some things I do tend to enjoy just by out of chance that not many others out there do, but at the same time, even I can go for a little bit of mainstream. Balance is nice, and also it all really boils down to who you are and what you wish to and not to enjoy.
Just keepin' it real. *Original gangsta pose*

O, lol, well thanks for the support, but this post wasn't simply about Anime. It was about bandwagons in general, and how people seem to be jumping on the "I'm going to hate "this" bandwagon because everyone else likes it" bandwagon. I just used anime as an easy example. :P I could have easily used Pokemon, or Harry Potter, or some other such, ya see?

Anime Freaks the hell outta me. (sorry if hell isnt aloud here at the forums, but had to use it. >.< Im getting sick of anime. Its always here and there, it seems that it cant stop going into a big structure. Mostly all cartoons in Nick, Cartoon network, and such have been turning into one big anime freak channel. I dont know much about these channels, I never watch TV in my entire life. Another thing that I want to point out is that Anime does not make any since, BARELY any anime show does make since, but mostly every single one of them does not make any kind of since. The lip sync is horrid, I couldent say that again. They just open and close their mouths without syncing with the voices. Sorry about this heart-breaking comment, but I had enough with these cartoons, I cant seem to rub them off me. ps, Chibi faces make me puke. End of comment. =P

Just because it's popular isn't a good reason, I agree. However they may have been turned off to it by bad experiences with those who liked it or see it once or twice and decide they hate it. With more popularity, the more likely someone who isn't in to it will see it and then decide they don't like it based on what they see.
I know that for some it's hard to get over certain stereotypes they've built about it, but that would seem to be a distaste towards a general style rather than hating it because it's popular.

No pointing of fingers here! :D And by the by, I love the childish ones too! :3 *Looney Toons* *dies* I'm not trying to point fingers. Sorry. I don't hate you or your character, but I don't like hybrids that much either. Bandwagons lol. I'm too ignorant to notice most of the bandwagons that exist. I try to form my own opinions before I see others. And then I realize that it probably sounds like I jumped into a big group. Believe me- I've seen Anime before. It's on often enough to whenever I flip on a TV- any TV- I get a sampling of it. Heck, I used to watch some. But then I realized that it was giving me nightmares. Then I stopped watching it and my life got about five times better, haha. I watch Sailor Moon with my siblings sometimes- even when I know what's going on it really isn't that fun to watch. And I've seen Naruto, so don't push that envelope to me either. I personally can't see anything worth liking about that show.

I suppose I must agree with you on the whole bandwagon thing, though, I'm sure we've all been guilty of it from time to time. Though usually, I can just...sort of tell if I'll like something or not by looking at it. No one ever believes me when I say this, but it's true. LEVEL UP ! ! I've seen people saying they hate various things (Most often anime, as you pointed out), and you can tell that they are only saying it because it's popular. Sad but true, and it'll never change. =/

On the Anime topic, I'm with Twi. What would you expect from fantasy animation -- dentistry? It's because it doesn't make sense that it's awesome.
As for not liking something because it's mainstream, yes, I find that to be quite foolish. I mean, there are two sides to the coin -- some people can become obnoxious about it. For example, Final Fantasy VII. The game is great in my opinion, but I find it has flaws. Bring these flaws up to the general fanbase and you'll have your ears chewed off about how you're supposed to overlook that. Not fun. So I can understand why people would hate anything mainstream, but if you're going to hate something, at least have a good reason.

Eh, bandwagons aren't all that bad. They become a problem when you're dealing with popular franchises and the fans are too stubborn to try anything else. Not to offend anyone, but from my experience I find that the typical conversation between a Naruto fan and another user tends to go like this:
Person A: Hey, do you watch Naruto? Person B: Eh, doesn't look that great to me. Person A: Oh, watch this episode! Then you'll see! * Person B watches episode 1. Person B: I didn't like that too much. Person A: Oh, but you must watch this next episode! * Person B watches episode 2. Person B: I didn't really like that one either. Person A: Oh, but watch the next one! Etc. Etc. Etc...
Really, I have no problem with people being fans of something, as long as they are modest about it, and they EG. admit to some of the problems and acknowledge other things of the same genre. You could say I'm a pretty die-hard Yoshi fan, but I can see merit in other similar characters such as Bowser and Toadette, and other series such as Zelda and Metroid. I like those things too, but I like Yoshi the most. To me, this is what being a fan should be about. You show great interest in one topic, but you don't make a fool out of yourself.
