'Hoy! 'Tis summer, so that means it's time for another attempt at making a Yoshi fangame! I've got the same vision as last year: a game that plays like Yoshi's Island, except is more adventure-based, where you explore a large area and get powerups in order to get to other places (sorta like Metroid, or the last few Castlevania games). So, why am I posting about it? I'm still not quite sure... I think I'm part excited about the prospect of making a game, and part looking for help. Except I don't know what I'm looking for. You see, I'm not exactly sure what anyone could do, would want to do, or would be able to do, given the weird restrictions (like making tilesets in 16x16 squares, with only so many colors, or using my funky editor.) All I know is that, if I try to make the whole thing by myself, I'll probably fail. So this is just a generic "any interest?" So, anyway, I really don't have much made, or done, or even planned out yet... And I know that there's that group RPGmaker project going on, so I don't know how significant this'll be... So... yeah. That's that. - Most of the first tileset -

Thanks for the offers, but I think the "weird conditions" interfere with each one. In the case of spriting, it's going to end up how it was in Yoshi's Island, with Yoshi himself being made in pieces (that is, his head, body, and feet were all animated separately.) And as far as backgounds go, they're going to be diced into pieces, as with the ground in my little tileset there. Erm.. most things OTHER than Yoshi will be done in single pieces... but will still need to be animated. And that can get a bit difficult. Isn't that weird? I ask for help, then refuse the offers with weird conditions... maybe this thread was a mistake... Well, thank you, anyway...

Well, I could help with character and plot design, I can't make sprites but I can sketch some landscapes for others to make I guess.

I know I said the thread was a mistake, but I'm all excited about making this again. ;D Besides I can always go and regret this later. I found all the buried code and animations from last year! Now it's as though I had never even stopped working on it! Kweh! Yoshi's pretty much completed. Soon I'll be able to go onto enemies and level features... So, um, if anybody who had offered to sprite would want to animate an enemy (within 16x16 or 16x24 pixels), that might work. (Just a suggestion .) And Darkstar, character and plot are good; so far, I have neither. That background concept idea sounds good too. I don't want anybody to commit to anything you wouldn't want to end up doing (that is, no pressure), but if you'd still like to help somehow... It'd be appreciated, I'm sure. ;D

Yeah, I'll do the plot and character if you want, you can also get Kooper909 to help with the music stuff, he has a whole site full of that kind of stuff.

Alright, cool! 'Course, I'll have to see if Kooper'd be willing to make music in such a case. Okay, I've got a general question: I've got a game that plays like Yoshi's Island, except without baby Mario. So how would Yoshi take damage without him? I've been trying to think of a good way, but I haven't had any ideas. I don't want to go with a simple hit point system if I can avoid it. No, I'd rather it have a more interesting way, have it feel more like Yoshi's Island... But I'm at a loss. Ideas? Anyone?

1) You could pull a Sonic and make him have items of some nature that he needs at least 1 of to survive. 2) ONE HIT DEATH! 3) You could pull a Spyro and have him be protected by something that wears away as he takes damage. 4) You could make him not be able to die by damage but by some other means. (Time limit?)

Collect fruit! ;D That would be pretty neat.
The most plausible choice, in my opinion.
Deteriorated saddle? I don't know...
Nah.

Collecting fruit would be weird though.. like.. "Oh no! Yoshi has no watermelons! He dies now!" I guess you could call it starvation.. but..

Or you can have some sort of hunger bar, and Yoshi must run around eating fruit and kicking ass before the hunger bar depletes and he faints or something.

I don't realy like that idea, (same reason why I didn't like how Yoshi worked in SMS) it makes it seems like Yoshi HAS TO be ALWAYS EATING in order to survive for a short period of time.

I'd say go with the one hit dealie, personally.
But theres also the chance to get something that'll take one hit, but the one hit kill is by default , if you get what I mean.
Kinda like that mask thing, on Crash, or a mushroom on Mario. Still, it kind of ends up like the hit point thing.

The whole "hunger-o-meter" idea has actually been done before in a not so well-known game series (Adventure Island.. you collect fruit to keep your health meter up but it drops as time moves on).
I think it would be better to stick with a more of a Super Mario-esque hitting system, where you start with only one hit, and if you power up in some sort of way, it will take two hits for Yoshi to die and so on..
I also have an idea that kinda makes it slightly harder to gain invincibility (thus being a little bit of a challenge). You could replace the Heart Fruit with an edible star-man like item that bounces around, but you'd have to catch it with your tounge and eat it. It would be harder to eat a dynamic object than a static one to earn temporary invaunerability, but that's my thought...

Okay, how 'bout I mish a few ideas together: For a reason I can decide on later, Yoshi's got this strange.... something that protects him (inspired by Joshi's story, with Anjil's Sapphire Locket)... It can protect Yoshi from different types of damage (this comes from Steve, a friend of mine,) and when he gets hit, it loses these stars (or something,) which can be quickly re-collected to recover some of the lost damage. If Yoshi gets hit by a particular type of attack (like, say, a fire attack) when the... protective something is out of that particular protective energy, it's game over.
This'd hopefully keep some of the feel of recovering oneself after a hit, like in Yoshi's Island or Sonic, but leave the protective thing variable enough so that you can get different levels or ratios of it (because this is going to be an adventure-type game.) Adittionally, the multi-protective thing should provide a new sort of gameplay element.
Any thoughts?
