So he can get hit by one type of energy once, and lose his stars, and if he gets hit by that same type of energy again then he dies?

Close. He wouldn't lose all of his stars, just some. And he'd also be able to collect them again before they disappeared.
So do you think it'd work? Or is it too weird?

I think it'd work pretty darn well. Here's an idea of my own, though... Just a plain old "pie-shaped" meter with about 5 (or a different number) sections, and every time Yoshi gets hit, he loses one. He regains 1 point of health by eating fruit, regains 2 points of health by eating his favorite fruit, and regains all his health and is invincible when he eats or touches a star. If someone already suggested this, please tell me.

Sounds a little like the Yoshi's Story hit system, no?
Well, I'll try and get a little play-test version together, and anybody who wants to try it can tell me how it plays...

www11.brinkster.com/yoshisan/downloads/yoshifangame.zipSo far, the only enemy is the Shy Guy and there are very few level elements, so this level may not be very challenging/interesting. Additionally, I haven't made any backgrounds (the ugly colors will be replaced eventually) or an underground tileset (which is why it's so boring-looking,) or any sort of display, so... disregard all that. Nonetheless, what's there is playable. The thing around his neck is supposed to be that protective-thingy.. I couldn't think of anything original to make it (and I hope Joshi doesn't mind.) Its easy enough to not get hit, so... go ahead and get hit to see if the recovery system is any good. And the key doesn't go to anything. It's just there to throw around. Like the melons. Except you can eat those.

Holy crap! Just making that really makes me want to learn how to make a game now ! Seriously, that was so awesome! Probably the only gripe I got about it is that the D-pad is on the right hand >_<. I feel so dyslexic when I play. I think I got to cross over my arms if I really want to play it well (observe me D-pad for the left hand rant in the ROMs thread). I hope you impliment a custom keyboard configuration in it . Other than that, I say it's looking quite godlike! ;D EDIT: Another interesting discovery. I found it very possible that you can go virtually horizontal forever hover jumping consecutively if you timed it correctly. Sorry to burst anybody's bubble if they want to cheat across large gaps over cliffs or something .

Wow, my fan fic made a difference! I am so happy I could cry. Oh Fifth, I don't mind at all, I like it when my idea make a difference really. I'm glad my fan fic was of any assistance to you, and I hope your wonderful game progresses smoothly. Now excuse me while I go play it. ;D

Looks good so far Although, it could do with a custom control thing, I think. Also, it seemd to be running really fast, for some reason, but I don't know whether thats my comp or something. Also, a request, make the option for it not to run in full screen , because I like to see whats going on in other windows too

Well, you destroyed what I could do in GameMaker, even in my Gradius game that got destroyed -_-; I absolutley love this. See, as long as there's people like you around, the age of 2D 16-bit side-scrolling platformers will never die. That makes me happy to no end. I have really only a couple inprovement ideas. 1) A Better background for outside. 2) The speed's a tad fast. (Not OMFG ITS NOT PLAYABLE fast. It's easily playable.) 3) Is there anyway to make up for lost stars? I never found a way.

Kweeh! Thanks muchly! ;D You have no idea how happy I am that you all are enjoying it! Kweh! Onto the concerns: It will have a custom control setup, hopefully sooner than later. I was going to add "Press Crtl+Y to change controls," but then I realized that doing that froze the game. Yoshi is supposed to be able to hover endlessly with little decline in altitude (just like in Yoshi's Island,) but there may have been some calculation differences, due to different computers... he didnt RISE with each hover, did he? I should be able to make it optional-full-screen-able with not too much difficulty... it just might end up looking a little blurred on some computers (blame Windows.) Don't worry about the background just yet. It'll have a nice 3-layer parallax once I get around to making it (probably the most tedious thing to do.) I'm also going to up the color mode so that the ugly colors in the back will become a nice gradient. As yet, there's no way to recover lost stars.... but was the star system working okay? I mean, gameplay-wise? And I'll do something about the speed. Kweh! Thank you all again! I SO want to keep makng this! ;D ~EDIT: Oh, and did anybody find the secret? Heheh...

Yes, Star-Wise, it worked great. I liked how the little bangle thing moved around when Yoshi moved. I found no issues with any of his comands or their animations.

The game was pretty cool! It had a few bugs in in it, but nothing you can fix...
You know the tunnel in the bottom, the very first one you see went you don't ride the platforms? Well you can go through that one, but the one after that one, when you go through it, it goes back in. OH but I like the cute dangling thingy! I hope you finish it soon!

...okay, I tried playing, and all I could do was swim in endless water with these smokey...cloud...thingies around me, no melons, platforms, shyguys, anything, not even anything to get hit with. Is there something wrong?

Alright, Joshi, I've just now fixed that bug. ;D Along with most of the others that'd been noted. Ah... but there're so many more... Nightcroshi, I'm goin' with Kooper on this one... I don't know what else it can be. Hmm... Yoshata, I'm guessing that something happened to one of the level data files... specifically, the file "000003.arr" somehow must've gotten lost... or broken. Try unzipping it again?

I've also noticed that at this point, you cannot die. Might I reccomend you lose more stars per hit? I had to get hit like, 15 times to fully lose the star meter, and that's without picking any up after I got hit.
