Well .. I'm no expert on this. But .. I believe if you really want it to be a "kick-rear" gaming system, you'll need to replace just about everything.
You could swap out the processor, but your processor speed is limited by the speed of the motherboard. A six-year old motherboard probably won't be able to keep up with a new one. So ... (remember i'm still not an expert) ... I think you would need to buy a new motherboard. That would also require a new processor, probably all new RAM (a more modern type), etc.
You would probably want to upgrade the hard drive, too, especially if it's 6 years old. Also, I think a good graphics card would be pretty important. I know next to nothing about graphics cards ... I'm a console gamer, myself.
Any processor speed upwards of 3.0 GHz should be fine. A gig or more of RAM should be good too. Hard drive space is a matter of personal preference and habit. There are also different seek times for hard drives .. but I think that they're almost insignificant for most uses.
And I'm spent. That's all I know ... some of it may be wrong. Can anyone set us straight?

If its a 6 year old comp, then its a good chance you'll need a brand new motherboard if you want to whack a new processor in there. I'd say for gaming, anything above 3 GHz should be enough. I'd recommend buying an AMD, though, they tend to be cheaper and run faster than an Intel at the same clock speed. On the other hand... AMDs run slightly hotter, so make sure you'd get enough heatsinks, fans, and a lot of air circulation in there. For RAM... 512 MB of DDR RAM is good enough, but eventually things will need at least 1024 MB of RAM. Its cheap enough to buy a lot of it. For the HD... massive, massive, massive. If its going to be a kick-rear gaming rig, you'll need plenty of space. For the Graphics... only buy card from ATI or NVidia. these two are the best ones you can buy on tjhe market. I'm pretty sure that the ATI Radeon 9800 is a good card, not sure what the latest NVidia card is. Make sures its an AGP card too. Naturally make sure the motherboard supports AGP Sound wise... probably best to get a Creative Labs Audigy. Not forgetting the standard DVD drive and CD burner. DON'T get a combo drive, if you plan to be copying a lot of stuff. Welp, thats all I can think of.
