It was a fine autumn day on Yoshi’s Island. The seasons had come quite early that year, but despite summer ending quickly, the preparation for winter was a welcome break from all the hot evenings on those summer days. One particular denizen was more than relieved at the sudden change in climate.
‘Aiie, finally! All that heat was too much for me. Roll on winter!’ exclaimed Koshi, an average sized Yoshi of lilac hue, as she trudged through the crunchy leaves. She was more appreciative of the cooler seasons, and had always had a strange adherence to hot weather. Much to the horror of the majority of the Island, who all would have preferred to laze on the beach and swim in the sea, than make snowmen and have snow expeditions (Yes, Koshi was quite a kid at heart, despite her serious attitude in front of others). But no matter, as now that it was coming nearer to winter, Koshi was all excited for the celebrations and festivals that would be held.
‘Yeah!’ She cried. ‘I can’t wait for the annual Fruit Tree Botany…that’s a sweet experience!’ she said, clapping her hands together.
~ The annual Fruit Tree Botany was a special event only held at a certain time of the year, more so in place of Christmas. It signified the beginning of life and purity, and was performed on the 15th of December each year. The sentinel of each part of Yoshi’s Island would plant a special fruit tree in their areas, each specially adapted to the surroundings of the Island. The fruit trees are all rare and exotic, thus only being able to live and produce fruit on a one year cycle. Every time an old tree died, it was replaced by the new one, and began to flourish by the middle of January. This special occasion was also a festivity for gift-giving, much like Christmas. ~
‘Hmmm…’ Koshi suddenly stopped and scratched her head. ‘So that means…I have to get…’ She looked at her hand, and began to count her fingers. ‘His…and hers…and oh, those guys too…and her as well…oh, don’t forget him…aww, man!’ An annoyed look crossed her face. ‘I have a ton of presents to get! Eek…this is gonna be hard. I should start right away.’ She mused, looking around and eventually fixed her gaze upon a large pile of leaves. ‘But…’ She grinned. ‘I suppose I can start it tomorrow!’ Running through the brown and orange foliage, she sprinted towards the mound.
‘HEY!’ A voice croaked.
Shocked, Koshi tripped and fell right over into the neat, tidy pile of crisp leaves.
POOF!
A thousand orange petals proceeded to flutter down from the sky. Groaning and mumbling Koshi turned over to sit up, brushing her knees. ‘Who…what…who dareth confuse me?!’ She spluttered, glancing around at the twiggy branches spindling about the trees surrounding her.
‘What have you done?!’ The mystery voice squealed again, this time right from behind her. Startled, Koshi swung round to meet face to face a very large and discontent Koopa Troopa. He glared at her with a closed eye.
‘Just what do you think you’re doing jumping in MY leaves which I so raked out of the kindness of my heart, EH?’ He snarled, edging closer towards Koshi.
‘YOUR leaves?!’ Koshi shrieked. ‘I hardly think you can claim ownership over something that is free for the citizens of this area to use.’ She crossed her arms and pouted. ‘Besides, I don’t see your name on them.’ She grinned.
‘Oh, a smart one eh?’ He winced and swallowed.
‘Eww…’ Thought Koshi. ‘He doesn’t seem like the approachable type. And his breath reeks.’ Staring at his face, she blinked in confusion, and eventually sighed.
‘…I’ll tidy them up if you’re so upset about it, geez…’ she proclaimed, shrugging.
‘It’s too late for your feeble excuses, missy!’ He waved his rake at her.
‘Hey, you could have someone’s eye out with that…pshh...uh, wait a minute. Missy??’ Koshi suddenly looked him up and down in disgust. ‘You can talk! At least I don’t look like some old coot that only showers once in a blue moon!’ She shouted at him. His face fell, and a look of sheer anger took over.
‘Right, you’re coming with ME.’ He lurched forward and grabbed her waist, eventually pulling her down and covering her mouth. For someone who was fairly short, he had a very tight grip. The more Koshi wriggled, the more he squeezed around her belly.
‘Mrfrfr…! Mrey…’ She spluttered. ‘What are you doing?!’ She continued her struggle, but to no avail.
‘King Koopa would make decent use of someone of your calibre…’ He grunted and threw her across his shoulder.
‘Oww, OWW! Wait, you’re a Koopa henchman? Ack, I should’ve known…your sliminess was the level of King Koopa’s, augh…’ She scratched at his shell. ‘Lemme go!’
The Koopa Troopa ignored her and quickened his pace, trouncing through the leaves. ‘Unfortunately for you…’ He said in a slurred tone. ‘There’s a base quarters not too far from here. And even more unfortunate…’ He stopped to look around, coughed, and then sniffed. ‘…the place we’re going to is where King Koopa resides anyways. So you will be dealt with quite swiftly.’ He turned his head, and pointed to a large warp pipe secluded by a plethora of leaves. ‘I believe this your drop-off.’ He winced again, and snickered to himself. ‘This’ll teach you to mess with my hard work!’
‘No, wait…!’ Koshi fell to the ground as the Koopa loosened his grip. He then grabbed both her wrists, and hauled her to stand up. ‘Have a nice trip.’ He swallowed again. With an almighty pull, he snatched Koshi into the air, and threw her down the darkened apocalypse of the pipe.
‘HEEeeeeyyy…..!!!’ Koshi’s voice silenced as she slid down the tube.
The Koopa brushed his hands and winced again. ‘A job well done.’ He swallowed.
~~~
A trickling sensation ran across Koshi’s face. Slowly opening her eyes, she frowned and eventually pushed herself to sit up.
‘Whu…?’ She blinked and rubbed her eyes, peering around what seemed like some sort of darkened stone room. Water was collecting in tidy puddles on the floor, and sludgy, green damp was seeping through the walls. ‘Eurgh, where’s the Mr. Sheen when you need it?’ She glanced around the room, and gulped. She had no idea where she was, and felt a little uneasy at the thought of the Koopa’s last words; was King Koopa really going to use her in his twisted army? Sighing, she got up and slowly paced towards a large bar gate which secluded her in the room. She placed her hands on the bars, and flinched at the icy cold running through them. Glancing around the outside, supposed corridor, she realised that this was indeed, no ordinary cell. She appeared to be the only one in this dank, cold dungeon.
Stuck in thought, she eventually perked up to hear what could only be described as the plodding footsteps of something very large and weighty. Naturally surprised, she crouched down and squinted through the bars, trying to get a sideways glimpse of whatever it was that was coming along the damp ridden hallway. As the hefty frame approached even closer, the shadows fell back and gave way to a very dark green, scaly figure…
