Wellll....
Getting a custom avatar can be confusing if you're not experienced with website making of any sort.
First off, you have to find somewhere to upload your pic to. You can get a free geocities account rather easily, or ask somebody who has web space to upload it for you.
Then you upload the picture. If you use geocities, you'll also have to change the filename to .txt ( picture.jpg -> picture.txt ).
Once it's uploaded, you can link to it with no trouble.
That's kind of a minimal explanation. Let me know if there's a specific part you're stuck on, and I'll try to help.
