Hi, I doubt anyone here would know me, but I recognize a few familiar faces here

Anywhoo, my name is Vaporshi (Vap for short) and I've been lurking this board for over half a year. I had intended to join long ago until I came upon a thread where people were badmouthing Coral and I (something related to the copyright of mermaid tails?) and it kind of hurt my feelings since I had no clue what was going on or why people disliked me. However, Coral was telling me that everyone here is really nice so I finally built up the courage to join.

Um...not much else to say. I'm an admin over at the Neo-Yoshi Aurorium and I'm in my last year of high school. I also enjoy drawing though I've been in a slump for some time now. I hope I enjoy my stay here! ;D

Oh yeah the Tail thing. Well, How should I explain...

Well, usually being innovative with a character might attract others into it, like Hybrids and stuff. Copyrighting a Tail because others using it does seem kinda wrong. Usually people copying others show flattery, saying that you or anyone else is a great artist. It's possible that they copied it from you or others.
For example, Dragon Wings, I have some, Yoshiken, Darkmark, Dragon and others has the same thing. Possibly from copying them or maybe because they like Dragons. I've seen some Yoshi artist with the same hair style as Luna and she liked it, so they're shouldn't be anything wrong with using someone else's idea as long they don't say "It's my Idea."
Conclusion: Not everything is owned by one person, you shouldn't be mad at others for using your idea, it's just a compliment about you have great art.

Eee.... the tail thing. xx; I just kind of give up on that whole thing because no matter what I say I feel like everyone thinks I'm being a horrible person. I'm just hurt, that's all. @_@; I can't do anything about it everyone tells me, so I suppose I have to listen. I just have to grin and bare it. Doesn't mean I can't express myself as being hurt by it, but I would never do something to a person over it.

I'm still around, though, I just do a lot of lurking ^_^; Been incredibly busy with things outside of the internet so it's a hastle sometimes to make myself come online to post every once in a while.

Vaporshi, I, the rest of the administration team, and all the members welcome you to the Yoshi's Corner message board. While there has been some 'conflict' at some point, I'm sure no one really cares any more, although, because I didn't exist here until a month after that topic, I'll note my little opinion on it, here.

If you create a new design of something, that is new, then I belive you are deemed all rights to it because you have created something 'original'. Coral, Vappy and Luna have all been online for years. I remember first seeing Luna's artwork way back in 1998, along with Coral's and Vappy's work. The work has been there for what? 8 years? Back then, that was something 'new and original' that most likely hadn't been done before. Twinned with the fact that there weren't as many Yoshi fans back then, the likeliness of anyone doing the same would've been extremely remote. To be brutally honest, I probably would've done the same as Coral. I wouldn't restrict anyone from using the idea, but I'd get a little upset if I saw someone claiming they were the first to do 'my' original idea.

Going against what everyone in that topic said, but I consider both halves. Time to bury that topic in my opinion using teh delete button. Bad history. We're not like that anymore. I'll give anyone to contest my decision 24 hours to tell me not to delete it.

I gave up long ago on preventing tail usage. I used to be very vehement about protecting Vap's tail back in 1999-2001 but after awhile I came upon the same conclusion as Coral. It still bothers me when people use the tail but I won't go out of my way to stop them or even say anything about it because I can't copyright a part of nature and I'm sure I'm not the first to think of it. In fact, I know I'm the not the first because Coral also had the same idea which is how we both ended up sharing the tail

You know, for the longest time I've always thought the pronounciation of your name was 'Vaporoshi'. I'm an idiot, hahah...

Glad you decided to join, despite past history. Oh, we sure have alot of that, eh.

Originality, yes, its a many splendoured thing, but of course...Yoshi fandom is still quite small. There are a few figures such as yourself, Coral and Luna whom all stand out in this tiny circle of fans, and it doesn't surprise me that people are in love with your work so much that they want to be just as good as you. It happens, and you just have to take it on the chin really...

(Although, subject to popular belief people don't like creating characters that are the same as others. This becomes a bit of a problem in Yoshi related areas, because well...apart from colour scheme, all official Yoshi characters are the same. Kids and adults alike go through identity re-evaluation from time to time, and this rings true online as well as off. People crave being able to make their characters unique, whether it be from a Yoshi wearing clothes, to being rainbow coloured, or even being a hybrid fused with an animal they love. Thats where the tail thing comes into play)

...so long as you are still willing to draw and make others happy with your character/art, the fans will respond and still see your character for their originality and such.
Of course, blatant rips like the one you mentioned are the ones to be careful of.

Someone actually went that far? Damn, I can imagine the fustration surrounding that. Did you email the webmaster about it? They would've probably taken it down straight away, most stealing webmasters are like that because they can't backup the ownership of anything they've stolen. Reminds me of the time I mailed someone for hotlinking crudloads of images from Yoshi Lore. They took it down in under 3 hours of me mailing them about it.

You can complain about people stealing entire characters or claiming ownership of the idea, but sadly, people may become slightly uptight about it if they're prevented from expressing their ideas, or contacting you or coral prior to being allowed to stick it up to avoid masses of arguments on dA or where-ever it's stuck up.

I know how you feel though. Being a developer, if I use a certain style, and it gets good feedback, sooner or later, someone's going to adopt the idea. I'd love it if they said in their deviation comments or site credits that they'd adopted the idea from me, but I know people aren't that nice.

I remember that girl, Vap. That website was so creepy, she even claimed to know Sparkle and said that the gift art Sparkle made you was for her.... so creepy. I'm glad she disappeared, I haven't seen a trace of her anywhere. ^_^;
