IGN.com: January 26, 2006 - After weeks of rumor and speculation, Nintendo today finally revealed its expected redesign of the Nintendo DS handheld system. Called the DS Lite, this new design will be released in Japan on March 2, 2006 and cost 16,800 yen (about 140 bucks US.) The redesign retains all the functionality of the standard DS, but makes things smaller, lighter and brighter.
The modified dual screen handheld has been tweaked into a smaller chassis. The new unit measures up to 133 mm wide by 73.9 mm tall by 21.5 thick. (that's compared to 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.99 mm in the original.) DS Lite weighs 218g, compared to the 275 g of the original.
DS Lite's biggest new technical feature is its updated set of backlit LCD screens. The system is brighter overall, and will give the user the ability to select from four different levels of brightness for viewing and/or battery consumption. A few other cosmetic changes were made to the new DS Lite -- there's a new hinge design, the power light was put on the left side of the hinge and is visible while the clamshell is closed, the mic is moved to top/center while the speakers are more centered, the Select and Start buttons are set on the bottom instead of top, and the power button is no longer on the front, and all of the dark button colors are changed to whites and grays. The cute DS logo is also placed on the front. Basic functionality, otherwise, looks to be identical to the original DS.Opinions? I think it looks pretty neat - seems Nintendo started to mimic Apple's "simple, clean and beautiful" design, and this isn't bad at all. In fact, it's great. Although the owners of the current DS don't have to change their system - probably Nintendo only wants to expand their base of users to people who were like "zomg im totally not going to buy this cuz its big and looks too ugly and stuff". Just before y'all start complain about the 'too early' appereance of this DS redesign, heh.

NOOOOO *slams into the wall* Why does Dang Nintendo have to come with newer versions, I mean I just got my NDS! I would've hang myself if this Nintendo DS could connect to the Gamecube... For the same reason that Microsoft comes out with a new version of Windows almost every other year; for MONEY. Dude, that thing looks sweet. Although I'm not planning on getting a DS anytime soon, if I did, I would probably hold out until this thing came out. It looks sleeker and sexier than the original version, which will attract more customers because our society is addicted to small technological devices. Also, the new features look quite appealing as well.

Mmm, reminds me of... milk or something. That looks cool. I'm not really worried about getting it, since I could just use my brother's DS rather than buying a brand new one. Haaar, this is why I always wait a while after a new system comes out. They'll come out with some cool, new color or design after a couple years or so.

...That is sexy. But naturally I already have a DS so I'll need to wait until this one breaks before I'll bothered with the iDS

lol, that's quite funny. Come on, that's far from true. Windows LEVEL UP ! ! is in its 5th year now before we're seeing Vista. Ofcourse they make some sub-versions but those are aimed at the buisness markets like windows server.
Anyway, that does look very nice indeed. I don't mind on Nintendo improving things cosmetically and generally improving the design, though I do find the mention of a better screen a bit annoying. That means its been technically improved which just makes you feel a little ripped off.
Ah well. Good touch putting the microphone in the middle below the screen. Though I can't help but think that's the kind of thing that should have been done in the first place.

I'm pretty sure there will be a way for the current DS and the GameCube to connect. I really don't think many new features were added to the DS Lite, except for a compact size. Same thing with the GameBoy Micro compared to its big brother, GameBoy Advance.

I doubt they'll bother at this point to announce something to connect the DS to the Gamecube.
No, I think they will be waiting for the Revolution which will have wi-fi built into it. The DS and Revolution will be able to work together directly without any wires.

I'm pretty sure there will be a way for the current DS and the GameCube to connect. And I'm pretty sure there will not. That would be nonsense. :P But as Bry said, you can be sure about the Revolution compatibility of Nintendo DS - and if N can make the connection between DS and Revo a serious thing (which they couldn't make in the case of the GC / GBA :P), it can be a big advantage against Sony, and especially against Microsoft. In other words, if they can manage to make the current DS owners (~14 million) buy a Revolution because of the sweet things you would able to do with your DS if you have a Revo next to your TV (for example: downloadable demos for your DS, or free minigames (like Xbox Live Arcade or what)), then err... it would be great for 'em. :))

God damn.
I recently convinced a frined to get a DS, and he said to me, "Luke, this better not turn out to be like the other things, and have a new version come out a week after I buy it..." (Like the GBA came after the GBC, and then the SP coming after getting the GBA...)

Darn, hahaha. This is exactly what happened with the Advance and SP for me. It looks... cute now. Mine is still better, with its smudges where I poke the screen... I like the bigger screen on the DS, though. I have no precision on that thing, haha.
The DS-Revo is a good idea. I hope they use it so I have a better excuse than before to want one. =D

They really have to make the connection between the Revo and the DS, if not tehy shall go into bankrupt, it's really interesting that the future of Nintendo really lies on how good the Revolution's gonna be.
