My first topic here in the games forum. I feel special. And I must apologize. I've neglected the YC. Shun me. >: *Hugs everyone* OKAY, NOW, TO THE TOPIC! There's a large variety of games. Yes, there are. The first-person-shooters. Grab your SMG and start blowing the crap outta stuff. Or a shotgun. Shotguns are niiiiiice. Quake 4 had a nice selection. Nailgun? I like firing superheated nails at things. (Of course... Nuclear Warheads are nice, too. XD) Next comes the RPG's or 'roleplaying games'. They're fun. In my opinion. Then again, I like the first-person-shooters, too. Usually they've got the swords, shields, magic... And WHATNOT. Grab your steel, and meet me at the draw bridge! Nah, not really. Then comes strategem. Be smart. (Haha. It's not my fault if SOME OF YOU *Coughkcoughucoughrcoughtcoughicoughscough* (Havee fun deciphering that.) can't quite pull through. Use your brain, think ahead of the computer, plan your moves, and dominate. There's more. I'm sure you know of them. And I'll let you do that since I'm oblivious to them. I... Think. xD Anyways, by now, you must be simply wondering--"What is the point of this topic? WHY IS YOSHIKO BEING SO STUPID!?" Well, fellow YC'ers. The point of this topic is to ask you this question: What do you prefer? What do you play most? Do you just simply hate one kind and love another? Tell me. And others. And everyone. SHARE THE LOVE! *Ahem* Now, I myself play first-person-shooters. They're fun. I like to blow things up with various guns of destruction. Chainsaws, too. Many first-person-shooters have chainsaws for some reason. But I'm fine with that. :3 I play a lotta roleplaying games, too. They're fun, sometimes just because of the plot, others because of gameplay, and at times, because of just all the elements combined. I play strategem as well. Fire Emblem, particularly, if not the only. I just like being smart and owning computers.
Now, fellow YC'ers! I ASK YOU! WHAT DO YOU PLAY?

I personally like racer games. Like MarioKart, or Sonic. I'm not sure why; maybe the fast-paced actiony-ness of it, haha. RPGs are awesome. My favorite would be Paper Mario 2, and Yoshi's Island (if Yoshi's Island is considered an RPG).

I mostly play racing games. The best are Gran Turismo 4 and the newer Nascar games. Everything about them is so realistic (unlike those crappy Burnout and NFS games). I get pretty mad on how some racing games are just absolutely unrealistic.
RPGs are cool too, I like a lot of Square Enix's games. They are truly works of art.

Thanks. And Drakengard? Is that really good, I heard it's a little repetitive?
Also, I forgot to mention this: Besides RPGs, Racing are good as well. The Mario Kart Series, Burnout: Revenge, Diddy Kong Racing, and Crash Team Racing.
Adventure-Wise... Spyro, Mario, Sonic, Megaman(Classic and X), Legend of Zelda(I've only played Wind Waker) are the best Action/ Adventure.
The closest thing I've played that shows a little reality is the Tony Hawk Series. I really like playing Underground 2 and American Wasteland. It's also extremely funny too.

Thanks. And Drakengard? Is that really good, I heard it's a little repetitive? Well, it depends on just how long you can sit and do a certain couple of things for. I mean, it is pretty fun. I like Drakengard 2 more than Drakengard, because the combo system is improved, as well as a variety of more attacks. It can be repetitive, but still, the storyline's a major part of the games. One reason it's so awesome.

I play a fair array of different styles, it just depends on how I feel for the most part, to be honest. That array would include fantasy, first person, third person, MMOG's(fantasy, but online), racing, platformer, adverture and strategy. I'm no fan of fighting games as they require no skill other than fastest finger first (In my opinion). I prefer a game I can sit down and think about and work my way up the ladder (Thats why MMOG's appeal to me) to earn a title as a high level player. Getting to Godlike on Unreal Tournament and still letting the flak fly was fantastic.
Offline I'm currently getting through Final Fantasy 9, and getting practice in on Halo 2 when I can(Which is minimal, at best) for the next time me and Contention face off because I've been slacking. Online, ROSE Online.

This question is something which can really boggle at times. It definetly depends upon the types of play that are given and all the while. Of course, those genres that you mentioned are defineltly the pieces to the puzzle which form the grate. All on their own, they make something out of the consoles in which we play today. From simple little games to the large crowds, each manifesting off of the other; learning and scripting until each fine edge is sharpened and labeled. Then, upon their release, we as ourselves seem to go crazy to grasp our hands upon them. The most simple of things at times can even occupy our thoughts; for it's how they are originally based which makes them magnificent in the forms they posses. By that we move and continue to buy, to sell, and to spend; all the ambition but to hold what we love so dear. The catagories are endless, each game formed around another noble cause. Finding the truth behind the reasons for such is hard, for it's somewhere dug in our own amusment; from fruitlessly searching through levels, from firing at hordes of demons, to the all around wheel turning scenario of establishing a plot line over and over. These things don't seem to bore our generations, on the contrary they make us rise from our coffins and returns to the systems of which we adore. It's hard to decide whom gains the best in games though, for all three companies devulge into diffrent genres; making the choice mere opinion alone on the side of all factors.
One most wonderful of all forces seems to be that of which plays into the level of FPSs, of course this is merely a word of opinion. Something which draws in is the simplicity that is given forth by these games. The ability to see the world through your characters eyes, to experience what they do. The quick paced action never seems to fail either, from firefights to thrown explosions; each is special in it's own way. What makes these games are the images behind them, graphically they have always been amazing. Yet, they do lack in the conscience of their story; one of the few with a true plot is that of Half Life and it's brethren sequel. These two gave something that could be followed; a type of guideline which kept the player involved in what they did. Twist and turns gave it complexity, made it out to be something that couldn't be denied; it also gave the players a climax to fall within. This was one of the first titles that made FPSs all worth while; for it finally dug it's nails into being a part of what you were playing. Other games like Halo and Prey have crossed the lines of originality. From walking on walls to all over the place, using grenades to stick upon your friends; both have given a new door to the world. These titles are usually abandoned merely because of how they focus, the simple layout of what is given; but it's that which gives them truth. It's easy to get them under your belt, not hard to gain anything within them.
Other games that seem to fit easily are that of the RPG as you stated; yet when they become MMORPGs they become something in and of itself. The form around them is simply amazing at times if done correctly. However, it's easy to understand how they work and as to why. The main point simply seems to bust over things and things again. To go around a world and simply level up, get stronger then those around you. Something about this makes it amazing though, it gives you dedication to not give up; that power to move forward and gain mystical forces as your aid. That and being with your friends makes it all worth while, by giving that power to enjoy the time that you can spend. It also gives that competitive value to the soul of the sport, making it all worth the motions you might spend.

I play just about any type of game genre, I don't think I hate one type of game. Although I'd like to mention my personal favorite genres.
Platformers: Ok, so they're basically dead on consoles, but they stay alive thanks to the handheld market. I just love all the jumping and challenge that requires to finish some of the levels (mostly, this includes secret levels and boss levels). Games worth mentioning in this genre: Mario series, Sly series, Psychonauts, Kirby series, and a whole bunch more.
Adventure: this are just, if not more, alive than when they first appeared. Just the puzzles on some are worth playing the game. The Legend of Zelda series is one of the few that really stands out in this genre. Games worth mentioning in this genre: LoZ series, Myst, and several others.
RPGs: RPGs is one genre that everybody seems to love. With some of the best stories, it's easy to know why people like them so. The battle systems on some are as fun as they are innovative. This genre is so big, that there a bunch of sub-genres for it (either that, or it's that most genres have a RPG sub-genre). Games worth mentioning in this genre: FF series, Tales series, KH series, and... to many to mention.
Arcade style racing: Yeah, I know, this is a sub-genre. But come on, I'm not a big fan of sim racing games, but that's just me. Games in this genre include the Mario Kart series, Burnout series, etc. I like the fact that you can throw items (for some), use turbos (most of them), and the fact that you don't have to learn a bunch of things before you can actually turn how you want (no stopping, nor shifting the weight of something, blah blah blah). Games worth mentioning in this genre: Mario Kart series, Burnout series, Toon Racing (I think that's the name), Diddy Kong Racing, etc.

I like the fact that you can throw items (for some), use turbos (most of them), and the fact that you don't have to learn a bunch of things before you can actually turn how you want (no stopping, nor shifting the weight of something, blah blah blah). I dislike racing games like that. I really only enjoy the difficult simulaters and racing games. The ones that test your mind and endurance. Where you need to know how to set up a winning car, how to conserve fuel and tire mileage, when to shift gears, where to start breaking, when to start turning, how to apex a turn, when to make a pass and how to keep the position. And turbo boosts I dislike as well, especially when the designers don't give the computers boosts, where's the excitement in that? I know that some games are less strategic for fun purposes, but I only find fun in the more realistic simulaters. To add on to my post earlier, I don't mind playing First Person Shooters. My favorite is the Medal of Honor series. Maybe some of you are asking, "What about Halo," to tell the truth, I hate it. I consider it very and extremely repetitive.

RPGs would probably have to top my list, as RPGs have so many varities within -- ATB/Turn, Action-RPG, Sim-RPG, Live-RPG.... of Which many of my favorites are the classic Final Fantasy series, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana series, Age of Wonders...
MMORPGs I like, although with all the good they bring, they are also a world of evil -- they let you create a character and slowly work your way up to a noble position of great power where you can do grand things with multitudes of others for a gereat time and excellent rewards -- but also, in the fact that RPGs have become so computer-operated and graphics-oriented, everyoner seems to forget the first wtwo letters of the abbreviation RPG -- Role Playing. Oftentimes MMORPGs seem to be competitions to be the best, where in the process you realize you won't be unless you spend every waking second of your life doing it, and then lose interst and fade away. That and free ones tend to have a thing about being plotwise-pointless and noob-ridden to the gills. And if the character customization is very limited, that makes me very sad.
Also, I like RTS type games, as of late I've been playing an excessive amount of Age of Empires III, mainly because I like all that strategic stuff, but I do say I have a great fancy for the aethetiscs of base/city building -- I love doing that alone, that's half the enjoyment of the game, for me. TRIPLE BONUS MULTIPLIER ! !

I would have to say that RPGs are my favorite types of games. Specificly the adventure ones. I guess it's because I just like the battle system, and how you'll actually have to plan out every move in order to win. I also like how you'll get stronger as you go through the game to. My favorite RPG games are Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi, and Super Mario RPG. I've never played the Final Fantasy series, however. I really need to though.

I'm sure I have at least one favorite game in each genre. I play various kinds of games, but I suppose my favorite are platformers. There are way too many games to mention in that category; Mario, Banjo, Donkey Kong, and Kirby only being mere examples. Also, despite RPGs and FPSs being the bottom on my list, I still love games from those such as Mario RPG and Unreal Tournament. I don't know, they just give me warm, fuzzy memories. Other than that, RPG and FPS games do not interest me much.

My favorite game type'd have to be the platformer. I believe that with platformers, you are in closer contact with the raw gameplay than with most other genres. It may sound a little corny, but such is my belief. And then when you mix the gameplay-purity of the genre with such things as puzzles, open exploration, story depth, what have you, you can end up with wonderful things... such as the action/adventure-platformer of the Metroid/Castlevania fame, which I've come to realise is my favorite classification.
Mmyup. Platformers, all the way.

I play at least a small variety of games.. I'd say that the ones that usually catch my eye are usually RPGs and Platformers, but I really like Puzzle, Arcade Racing, One-on-One Fighting, Multiplayer Fighting,((Smash Bros TRIPLE BONUS MULTIPLIER ! !)) Party, Light Gun and Music games, at least.. I tend to prefer games that are on the consoles or handhelds to PC games, but I think that's just because of what I grew up with and am more used to.. ((And I'm horrid at RTS))
I also haven't found much appeal in MMOGs, but that's more because I kind of prefer being able to play games against other people who are near me, for the most part.. Granted, playing older games with friends online or playing on my DS on Wi-Fi is fun, but for some reason those feel kind of different to me.. o.O Likely more gameplay style than anything ^^'
Anyway, yeah.. Platformers and RPGs are my faves XD ..Talking about this makes me want to replay my old Mario and Sonic games, as well as finish up Tales of Eternia.. o.o
((P.S.: I myself tend to prefer 2D games to 3D games, but that's really another topic entirely =P Tho I wish that some company would come out with a 2D game on a home console now to show just how amazing they could look))

Hmmm... I think i mostly play RPGs. Of 7 GBA games i have, 4 are RPGs. (Golden Sun and the Lost age, Riviera and Tales of Phantasia. I have Castlevania Double Pack too, but i don't know if Castlevania counts as an Action RPG). For the GC i have Paper Mario: TTYD and ToS (Probably my favorite game of this generation). I had Megaman X Command Mission, but i traded it fo Mario Sunshine And i finished many others RPGs.
In second it would be adventure games. (Zeldas, SF: Adventures and others)
Next it would be Platformers/side-scrollers. (Megaman <333333, Marios...)
Oh, i also love Shooters Double-scoop ice cream
