I don't know if anyone here's caring about this game much, since Square-Enix hasn't exactly proven itself as a sports game developer, but I was pointed to some interesting news on NoJ's site for the game: www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/ab3j/character/character02.html
As it turns out, in addition to the Mario characters we all know and love, including Yoshi, as if we had any doubt, there are going to be a few Final Fantasy characters! The characters listed are as follows:
Ninja Type: All-Around Special Shot: "Konohagakure" <-- I'll try and find a Final Fantasy translation for it if I can; does anyone have any ideas?
White Mage Type: Technique Special Shot: Holy
Black Mage Type: Tricky Special Shot: Meteor
Moogle Type: Tricky Special Shot: Moogle Dance
Cactuar Type: Tricky Special Shot: 1000 Needles
All of these characters are unlockable, so you won't need to worry too much at the beginning if you don't want anything getting in the way of your Mario XD
Also, there's an image for a third character page, but there's no actual page up.. I wonder who else will be announced..? *hopes for Geno and Mallow*
New info!
The third character page has now been updated, but the new characters are less interesting than I'd have hoped =\ Here's a run-down of the new characters:
Birdo Type: All-Around Special Shot: Egg Shot
Dixie Kong Type: Speed Special Shot: Parallel Cannon Shot
Paratroopa Type: Tricky Special Shot: Wing Shot
Fly Guy Type: Tricky Special Shot: Thunder Shot
Boo Type: Tricky Special Shot: Thriller Dunk
As you can see, there isn't anything particularly special about these new characters, as they're standard Mario sports fare.. Why couldn't Geno or Mallow be in the game? LEVEL UP ! !

..Interesting. o.=.O; It sounds like it'd be funny to see a White Mage in basketball. XD As for that Ninja shot, I believe it may mean Leaf-something. Or Petal-something. Possibly Petal Shot. I dunno. It'll probably be some very long-range move, knowing how Ninjas act throughough the series.
As for Geno, Mallow, and other SMRPG character showing up, I wouldn't doubt it. SMRPG was a Square production. =D

For the Ninja's move, I believe it's 'Hidden/hiding Leaf.' I find this game pretty interesting. I'll look forward to it. LEVEL UP ! !

I've heard about this a while back, but NEVER expected Final Fantasy into the mix! Too bad Fighter and Red Mage didn't make it, but seeing Black and White Mage is enough to make me happy. ^^ I'm going to try it as soon as it comes. Gar does seem right, based on the picture, it has leaves, so it might be something like that.
Something tells me, I know that "1000 Needles" special will hurt if it hits someone. ^^;

Both Black Mage and White Mage look awesome. And seeing that the first page is filled with Mario characters, and the second filled with Final Fantasy characters, then I would assume that the third page will come with SMRPG characters. Geno, Boshi, and other characters that appeared in SMRPG are most likely to appear.

I just wasn't sure which game it would be in, so I couldn't find an official US translation for it, which was what I wanted.. ^^' Ah well; thanks for the suggestion regardless!

If FF-class-based characters, moogle, and cactaur made it in, why not SMRPG characters? After all, SMRPG was a Square game. I don't see it as doubtful at all, Nintendo's always looking for ways to squeeze more canon into the mix.

Mario Characters and Final Fantasy characters/jobs as prominent as those have recurred many times until even right now. I assume Nintendo will never touch any of the SMRPG-specific characters like Geno and Mallow ever again, even though they're Square's property. The game was made ages ago and never had any of the characters referenced in anything, not even in the extensive list of SSBM trophies did Geno, Mallow, Booster, or Smithy appear. I would love more than anything for them to add Geno into SSBB since they're all friendly-like with Square-Enix again, but I don't even think it could happen for a second.

Little Mushroom Town or something? *shrug* We'll just have to wait until it comes out or a certain someone that's nosey digs up some info. *cough cough* .....*flees to all VG sites known to him*

What's with all this Square finally returning Nintendo's phone calls (or vice versa) of several years just lately? With all this possible, I wish there is a possibility to have some sort of extension to Super Mario RPG. Then again, that idea is nothing new.
Anyway, the game looks really, really interesting. I'm still not caught up in the newest Mario games, though.... Yar. I wonder what annoying gimmicks they'd throw in your face this time?
"All right, time for a slam dunk!" *Opponent freezes time and snatches ball* "Ssssssshhhhhi..........."

But anyway, it would be really fun for either an extension to SMRPG or a simple re-release for the GBA would be cool, but since the game is most likely planned to be on the Wii Virtual Console, I don't know how likely it would really be?
..And so my post has some semblance of being on-topic, it seems that each character's special shot has some sort of sequence of dots that you connect using the stylus.. So there's a gimmick for you, Teh =P
EDIT: From watching a video on the page, it seems that instead of connecting the dots, you merely tap in the areas on the screen in order to initiate the special shot, so that you can do it whenever you like.. This is bound to make Teh's situation a real possibility, hehe

I still hold that tiny far-off hope deep within me that Geno could appear. I do not beleive it, but the hope exists.

Hey all! I found some new info on the game's characters, so I thought I'd post it here.. But to keep things from being too seperated, I went ahead and edited my original post ^^ So look there! XD

Eek, why did they make Birdo a copy-off of Yoshi again!?
Yoshi's "special shot" already is the Egg Shot, correct?

Actually, I think that his special shot would end up being Flutter Dunk, in this case.. But really, they do seem to like having Birdo kind of paralleling Yoshi these days..
..I still wanna know why she's named Catherine over there D=
