WHAT HAPPENED BY THE SPRING~~~
Padding through the forest on a frosty autumn night
Underneath the stars that were shimmering so bright
A young feline was edging towards the sparkling forest spring
To quench his thirst and listen to the gentle tree frogs sing
On his way he heard a muffled sigh coming from ahead
It was filled with sorrow, death, and horror, woeful fear and dread
As the feline walked up to the spring he saw the saddest sight
For a she-cat sat there whimpering, and death was in her sight
The grass had covered up the mess, for he lay there torn apart
The tomcat sat beside her to repair her shattered heart
Who had done the dreadful crime was a question left unknown
But in his eyes though dead and cold his burning fear still shone
“My lady, what has happened to this brave and noble warrior?”
“I cannot tell you deputy for I truly did not see.”
“My lady, do know this cat- is he close to you?”
“He was my love, my life, my world- but now he’s only what he be”
The tom looked down again into the warriors fear-struck eyes
To see if he was hiding any clue to his demise
The tomcat looked away and felt a pain stab deep inside
In these eyes he saw the battle where this cat had died
He looked at the pretty young she-cat, with eyes as sad as hers
He said “This is no time to be depressed, my lady of the spring”
He cautioned “ No good untimely death doth ever bring to us”
“We must leave, we must leave soon- let us leave the next morning”
She smiled a false smile and kissed her love goodbye
They buried him beneath the ground he lay
She whispered to his grave, “May you always rest in peace”
And then the two young cats went quickly on their way
The day was grey and gloomy, the sun had never shone
The mood was set for sorrowed hearts to leave their only home
They walked with sadness as a troubled swiftness drew them on
And their time was short so each did know they must be moving on
Often they would hear the slightest movement in the brush
And often the would stop abruptly just to hear it hush
But the fearful cats continued moving on along their path
For the danger at the spring was one that filled the air with wrath
The she-cat felt so hungry that she thought she might not make it
The tom smelled for a rodent in hopes that she might take it
Though he felt near as weary and quite cold without the sun
And his throat was so dry that he too thought that their lives were done
This walk throughout the forest lasted nearly half a year
And they had mastered all its dangers even in their fear
And thought that they’d escaped the terrors of their home, the spring
But they had not the knowledge of what this trip would bring
Someone had been following them, ragged, cold and hungry
Someone knew just who they were and where they planned on going
This feline was persistent, and he always kept his pace
And even walked along as it was snowing
The traveling two, (or maybe 3) had reached their destination
A brand new spring with brand new cats who welcomed them to stay
And even though they felt at home and safe within their dens
Their future was still dark and laced with gray
The tom and the she-cat were sitting in the moonlight
And both of them began a gentle purr
They were enjoying and loving their newfound life
And the chilly wind within their soft young fur
She rolled in the grass and pawed at a daisy
He told her he needed a drink from the spring
He padded off, into the darkness
Until every last tree frog ceased to sing
It was too dark to see and the she-cat was fearful
Her eyes were wide and her heart was racing
She got up despite all her worry and horror
Then off to the spring she was pacing
The night was black and cruel, and as she walked oh how she stumbled
And in her frantic search for him she heard a whisper through the dark
She stopped, her ears swiveling in every which direction
And as the moon seeped from a cloud her back became an arc
“Not again, my love, not again! You cannot do this to me!”
And she stooped by his side and whispered in his ear
“Speak, my love, what did you say? Speak- please let me know”
“Run” he said, his voice did quiver “The lethal one is near”
The she cat looked with panicked eyes around the dim-lit spring
“Stay calm” he sighed “Stay calm, that is the most important thing.”
And even though he said for her to leave and run away
She sat and stared within the brush, and screamed, “Just go away!”
“You savage beast, you monster, why do you kill them all”
“My husband and my deputy, the ones in whom I love!?”
“Do you find it pleasurable to see them fight and crawl”
“Against the pain that you have filled them of?”
She snarled into the darkness like a lion to its prey
And a deep voice it replied “Why yes I do”
“But not because I like the look of pain within a soul”
“Because I like the pain in ones like you”
“And what am I? What is he? We are cats and that is all!”
“You are rubbish, you are garbage! You are puny, you are small.”
The figure it stepped forward to revile a deadly form
For there, there stood a puma- and its eyes they weren’t warm.
“You puny little rodents- all you do is laugh and play”
“And roll around within the grass in that childish sort of way.”
She said “At least we are not killers who destroy those of our kind”
He snarled “At least we aren’t scared of the life we left behind.”
And with these words she helped her tom get up onto his feet
And they both turned to see the horrid puma start to leap
And they both knew just where they should run- where he would never know
Home- they would run home. That is where the two would go.
And despite his injuries the tom he galloped out of sight
Followed by his loved one as they ran into the night
The puma had only seen them for a moment or so
Before they were gone on their journey back home
