CHAPTER 1
“There I was in the midst of the forest, a small vole creeping through the roots and undergrowth, unknowing, watching and listening for predators. It was unaware of my presence, for my scent was of the forest leaves and my footsteps soft as the summer breeze. I prepared to attack. Three, two-”
“Don’t let the little devil put such nonsense in your young minds!” Mark yowled at the kittens, still wide eyed at their brother’s adventurous tale of his morning hunt. “He’s full of enough cat dung to fill up your litter box!”
“Am not,” Mathew yowled, “It’s all true! Mark is just sour because he’s too chicken to even set foot out the door!”
Mark stepped back and sat down, covering his embarrassment by swiping a paw across his face.
“Dangers lurk outside this house, boys,” he warned “dangers that I myself have had to face. I too was a curious kitten such as yourselves once- and I did get outdoors. Yes the woods may seem welcoming, but they are anything but. There are strays out there, ones who have escaped only to be lost in the maze of the trees- and they aren’t very friendly seeing that they’ve not made many good relationships with the creatures that dwell beneath the trees. They kill what moves and evade anything bigger than them. Sadly, I was at that time, smaller. That’s how I got this.”
Mark pointed his paw to the scar across his left eyelid.
“You’re filled with as much dung as I’ll ever be!” Mathew sneered, “I bet you went to rub your eyes one morning and left your claws unsheathed!”
Mark smiled and added, “Oh by the way Mathew, you slept like a rock until noon this morning. How was your morning hunt?”
The kittens giggled. Mathew dug his claws into the carpet, but soon relaxed and departed to lunch, a can of wet food sitting on the counter, awaiting him~
CHAPTER 2
Mathew and his brothers gazed through the glass window. They all felt a longing in their hearts, but Mathew the most. Running through meadows, chasing mice beneath the trees, basking in morning sunlight, catching fish from neighboring ponds, and licking my paws clean with a belly full of delightful food and a smile on my face as I watch the sunset!
He dreamed.
His siblings were only curious, but he felt as if he already knew, and was just awaiting his chance to break free. He didn’t understand yet why Mark was so scared of this world. But his fantasies were only part of what life was like out there. He had set aside the cold of winter, the danger of the forest, the harshness of the climate, and the horrible things he would have to endure to get by. He didn’t understand that there was no way of escaping responsibility, and the burdens that life brought, nor did he know he should be thankful for the life that he had.
I could be great! Strong and handsome I could parade along the countryside like a king. No more “Mathew the adorable little tabby”, no more hugs and kisses. But endurance, and a life of I’ve wanted to live all my life!
“That little kitten is in for it” Mark said, shaking his head as he watched Mathew’s wide eyes gazing at the window, “And there’s no way to stop him, either”
