It was the first day at WhiteMountain Middle school, and as they did every year swarms of excited young kids crowded through the doors of the old brick building sharing summer news with their former schoolmates, whispering about what the new year will be like and gossiping about newcomers- whether good or bad. One of these newcomers was Zoey, who was 13 years old and not at all excited about going to school here. She had been the most popular girl in school just a summer ago, and now had the distasteful knowledge that she would have to spend ten months in and old run-down brick building filled with people much less “cool” than her. She saw it as a disgrace that none of the fine students of WhiteMountain would ever know her and respect her as she deserved to be respected. She walked in the building with a disgusted look on her face, for in a flash she was nearly trampled by a group of immature little sixth graders having a famous WhiteMountain eraser battle. Another newcomer was Dennis. He was extremely smart, but also extremely shy, and because of this none of his teachers had ever known that he should be moved up to higher classes. He got good grades, and could do better, but he was too reserved to put in any effort and exceed the standards. Dennis was extremely thin with long brown hair- no one ever made fun of him because he was neither ugly nor wore clothes that were worth laughing at. But sadly he always jumped to conclusions and secretly thought that the world was plotting against him, and that meant that the school was as well. He stared at his shoes as he strode into his new school- another year of complete solitude, trapped in a little desk, with that little pang in his back as eyes burned through him and made him want to slink away into a cave and duck for cover.
Zoey was strutting along the hallway playing with her hair and feeling quite magnificent in all her glory, when two boys, Rodney and Jake, wrestling through the halls accidentally knocked her down. She stood up with a face like she was going to die, and screeched “Eeeeew, get away from me you slimy freaks!”
It was evident that Zoey was going to make quite the impression in WhiteMountain. Despite Zoey’s disgust, the two boys stood up and laughed at her. “You should have seen your face!” They laughed, pointing at Zoey and snorting with bouts of hysterics.
“You looked like you just got sprayed by a skunk!”
Zoey was surprised and quite angered by this reaction. They were supposed to slink away under her evil glare, or beg forgiveness. Why were the laughing at her? Had she only been popular at her other school? Zoey was electrocuted with a cold bolt of lightening that of what might happen. Maybe she might move down in ranking in this school- and the thought of being a nerd only scared her more. She left them with another disgusted “Uuuuuurgh!”, and marched down the hallway, trying to push all unwanted thoughts out of her mind.
Dennis sat at his desk, his face blank, but his thoughts running swift as a river through his head. Why had his family moved to Maine? It was hard enough surviving at his own school- but at least it was his school. This was some strange exotic land with people who he’d never seen before, and he was some foreign exchange student from Japan who didn’t know English and was used as a source of entertainment. Then, Dennis’s mind broke off from his thoughts as he realized something. These people didn’t know him. They had no idea who he was, whether he was shy, or smart, or anything. This was his chance, his chance to leave last year behind. This year, he could step up and make friends and be loud and awesome and have everyone love him. He had a fresh start to do things right, but he had to plan things out so he wouldn’t screw up…
