The chime you hear is not a Bogus next_env argument 185156 185552 error. Relax. It's a school bell. For roleplaying. Yes.
Your instructors currently consist of me and 'Rage. More staff will be accepted through IM only, if you wish to do so.
We're here to help improve your RP ability, not to start it from scratch. If there are any questions, then ask them. Information will be basic at first, and more details will be given over time, or upon request.
Bust out those notepads for some select CASE basic guidelines, 'cause there will be a Test on this, as soon as I get the Energy to write it up:
Case 1, your characters can and will be defeated. No miracles, keep the situations reasonable. Your characters do not have supreme firepower, defense in depth, and unconditional evasion.
Case 2, You are not always successful, but you are not always a failure. You will miss once in a while, and not just because the other guy says so.
Case 3, read and pay attention to every post, especially the long ones. Every sentence contains information that can be used or exploited, no TLDR situations messing others up.
Case 4, You cannot do everything. Remember that a character is defined by what it can't do just as much as it's defined by what it can.
Case 5, Keep in mind that energy is being drained, especially from the more powerful abilities. You don't and can't have infinite energy.
Case 6, You can and will be hit, hurt, crippled and miss. Chances of flawless victory are slim at best.
Case 7, Fighting isn't necessarily the solution. If you do so, then expect to get smacked around while bringing the beats to the enemy.
Case 8, Keep any and all knowledge you obtained through means other than eavesdropping, being talked to, discovering, or seeing, out of the RP. Separate your IC and OOC for a more ...enjoyable... experience.
Case 9, Try to explain it throughly.
End Select.

Alright...non infinite power...reading the posts, especially the long ones, not gathering information on what is not said, Gotcha.

Wow, I started from scratch and got most of these rules, but this is very useful for people like Voshee. I will pay attention, though, sinse I won't be learning much anyways over the summer ^_^

*shakes his head* no. notta. nat. rping is for fun, each rp has its limitations, and members should discuss them there, on the signup rp page. if members do happen to go too far, other rpers tend to complain, and that individual usually leaves the rp. these rules cant apply for each rp, for example, teos mystery rp, which dosent include fighting. sorry, i cant abide to these rules unless there is a specific fighting rp which follows this thread.

These are general guidelines that can be applied anywhere.
Notice the "if then" and "can" statements with regards to fighting. They're also in a CASE statement, so they're only used when they apply.
Read it fully, and it's dissimilar to typical set-ups of other Rps, this does not mention anything specific that has to do with what type of abilities, character "classes" and alignments are allowed. Rather, it states that you should be reasonable when making your picks.
Rps are for fun, however, how fun is it when the opposition never takes damage, always hits, ignores important details in larger posts, can do everything without limitation, uses information that his character couldn't have known and attacks everything first?
Then, in order to bring the balance back, you have to refute what they entered into theirs, starting problems between players rather than player characters.
We're trying to prevent player-to-player friction, player complaining and the exile of players by addressing the underlying issues. People complaining and leaving are not signs of a healthy environment.

yea, i know that. damage in the rps me and my friends are in is distributed evenly, but our rps are mostly adventuous, and very little fighting until come to the end of our rp.

It's not necessarily fighting specific. CASEs 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 all apply outside the combat zone.

Yeah, godmoding just makes the entire thing boring...
I'd rather read through a long and interesting post where the guy gets smacked around a bit, rather than "Dude does a flashy move and everyone drops dead in a second" type posts.

I like that better too. It just sounds more like an 'adventure' if the characters get beat up a little, but not crippled, and they can't just kill everyone because of some wierd power. Things have to even out a bit.

But aside the obvious, I mean if one person is totally normal they are not equal power to another person twice their size, so combat will be easier for some people compared to others.

Mmk, it seems some people do not get our message, here....Well, lucky for us all, I've returned from another small hiatus, and are ready to share my sagely wisdom with you all..well, actually, it's just common sense advice..
First of all, this is NOT a combat rule list, it is a list of the points we wish to discuss in-depth with you all, to help you become better roleplayers. Combat rules are usually to be decided in the RP in question, not generally. There ARE some guidelines, to making a good RP fight, if you absolutely must have one. I find it more fun to have many many conversations in an RP containing what is going on, and more storyline, than fighting. Now, I'd like to point out Red, if I may. He has been doing...quite, sorry to say this, badly, lately. You see, there is not a certain way to RP, but there are ways NOT to RP. Such as copying things out of a book, Red. Or naturally assuming a topic containing some helpful combat tips to be about nothing but RP Combat. I've tried to contact you in MSN, and would like to, still, not for a lecture, of course..
But my point here is; Copying is bad. You should use your own ideas, and that way, you won't pish everyone off.

But my point here is; Copying is bad. You should use your own ideas, and that way, you won't pish everyone off. first off, this is the first time ive ever done what you call "copying." i really dont treat it as copying, but insperation. really, though, why cant i use things from a book? teo's (edit)detectives(/edit) rp comes directly from a book. even lava yoshi (sorry to bring you into this to) refers to pokemon colleseum from nintendo gamecube! i actually find it entertaining. i bet all of these rps have some sort of insperation backround thats influenced by the creater. i was even thinking on starting a dragon rp myself. my friends are devoting a whole forum to "Eragon" (the book im suppositly copying off of altho my insperation comes from final fantasy 11 as well.) they are making it a pure rp forum. i would stop using the words from the book if it is of dire necessity to your role playing habits, but no, i wont give up my pet dragon in yws rp. (one rp, not multiple ones im copying in.) not to be changing this discussion around concering yws rp (this should be pmed), but if you (rage) had joined eariler as most members, you wouldve noticed that i had obtained a dragon egg by putting together dragon armor, and saying some words off of a scroll. i had'nt even picked up the book "eragon" at that time. the only three "copys" i made (from eragon) where: "brisinger" - a spell from the ancient language sharing my mind with my pet dragon - which i dont find illegal at all since yoshee does it with champ almost in every rp and the "gedwey ignasia" which i made a little backround to saying that all dragon owners obtain one. im sorry if i trubbled you rage, but please pay more attention to the roleplayer's(s') mind(s), and pm me if you have an absolute problem with my role playing.

Listen, closely..I was making the point that your long-winded, almost perfect copy of an Eragon scene, was totally uncalled for. It's not wrong Red..well, it IS wrong to copy. It's just very irksome to everyone when someone in an Original RP, copies from something way unrelated. I was only talking about that isolated incident, no other. No need to get defensive.

About the so-called copies,
Brisinger is fine I guess, everyone has to have some way of delivering a spell. What does it mean again? Fire?
Sharing minds, yes that's done all the time.
And the Gedwey insignia, well, maybe that was a close copy, but it did bring some story, especially to Hax0's most recent post.
...You're planning on making a Dragon RP?

The fight isn't necessarily against drawing ideas from other sources, it's against copying multiple paragraphs and entire story arcs from other sources.
Taking a specific ability name from somewhere else- such as "Firega" or "Mystical Space Typhoon" or "Neverending Torment" can be annoying, but it's a minor detail that doesn't usually deserve much attention, aside from improving the Awesome Name quotient (although I don't think "Mystical Space Typhoon" improves it).
General ideas are also fine, they didn't necessarily get it from a known source. No one really "owns" the rights to things such as mind sharing, character combining, assembly, ice-based magic or Battleships sporting massive firepower.
But when large story arcs are hijacked and entered, especially if it's extremely random, things get problematic. RPs are generally designed for personal input, rather than taking a character and spinning it through a novel.

I only had problems with the whole 'getting the gedwey ignasia' scene itself, as it was just reworded from Eragon..and not very reworded, if I may say. The 2-handed sword, and the dragon, I said nothing about. People emulate character classes all the time, hell, look at what I've been doing! The point is you took a major storyline point from a well-known book, and made it a major storyline point for your RP character. That is both really unoriginal, and irksome. I mean, how would people feel if I made a character who had a lightning-bolt-shaped scar because he survived a Death spell from the strongest dark wizard ever? People'd be pissed I was stealing from Harry Poth-er-Potter. And don't go advertising your frigging board, I dun care, and neither does anyone else who reads this thread, this is for RP help ONLY.
