A guide to writing RPs! (Sorry if they're rules)

This may be a good way to explain how to set up an RP!


1. No God-moding. An example is an instant kill move that wipes out the entire field.

2. You can play either good, evil, or neutral characters. Your allegiance is up to you. I’d like to see some Player vs. Player action going on here.

3. Don't drastically change the plot

4. THOU SHALT NOT CONTROL OTHER CHARACTERS. You control only YOUR character and no more than that. Even for the smallest things like answering yes/no to a question. Shima has permission to slay [more like yell at] people who violate this rule.

5. Keep parties small, around 4 people. You may have more, but please be reasonable. No 20 people parties please.

6. When posting about attacking or taking action on or towards another person, you cannot post their reaction

7. You can have events leading up to drastic plot changes

8. You MUST describe your surroundings and actions fully.

9. Healing only does so much..... it doesn't heal you completely

10. For magics, be descriptive. Insert magic words if you feel the need to. People don't scream 'fire 1' and it works

11. Magic can cure smaller wounds, but if your arm is hacked off, I don't think cure 3 is gonna save ya. :/

12. No racism

13. No verbal bashing

14. No cussing unless its in your character's personality basis

15. Remember, these enemies aren't cake or easy. No one, no matter HOW strong, can tear through hundreds of people/demons without rest, help, or a ton of support from magics or etc.

16. Absolutely NO one hit kills that cover a large group. That isn't fun, leave room for others to play.

17. No use of word abbreviations like 'u' or 'ur' because I hate it. Also, type full sentences. Occasional misspellings are possible, because I do that too, but don't make it a habit ><

18. Posts MUST BE 4 SENTENCES LONG.

19. Do not post twice in a row. :/ Unless the RP has been still for like a week.

20. Because of the amount of people in this, LOCATION MARKERS ARE MANDATORY. Don't forget people.

21. No use of out of character information. This means that you can't know what they are thinking or what they are doing unless they tell you in dialogue or you see them doing it. Please, there are no mind reading in this world.

22. Give other people in your group a chance to post. Wait for everyone else to take their turn before doing anything. However, please try to post regularly so they don't have to wait.

23. Spacing rules. Put a blank line between paragraphs to make it easier to read since the forums don't support having indented paragraphs.

rules are set for each rp by the starter,the problem with rule 18 is that not alot goes on so how will some one be able to put four lines if there is nothing happening

why are so much people think that all rp's of the same rules. your spell rules are usless because people don't use numbers to show upgraded spells they use: -a spells for second level spells and -ga for third level spell(sometimes people don't even use that) (example: fire/fira.firaga) besides we already have rp rules

I don't travel here much, but Yink seems to have covered all the trouble spots I noticed. But, uh, you forgot a major problem that Lazo stressed rather nicely...

24. When in a duel, YOU CAN'T DODGE EVERYTHING. Bad things will happen to you. Don't think you can just step out of way of a huge explosion. However, if your character has natural resistances, that's not a problem; just be sure to mention that during sign-ups.

By the by, L.D, chill. These aren't rules...just constructive suggestions. VERY constructive. Heck, from what I've seen, I think you could learn from 'em yourself.

The only prob with number 18 is that if you are in a sittuation like 6 you might not be able to make a paragraph. Sometimes (most of the time) It's ok to post short 1-3 sentences. It all depends on the situation. So besides number 18 you've got good guidelinds. Can anyone sticky this?

There's already a thread for this: Yink could have put this there... Otherwise, I see your point. They do seem a little like rules, but I kind of like them.

This could have been added to the Community College, as several of these points are addressed there, but, this can work too. Even if it will be a little less ...concise... this way.

Regarding #2, those three are only basic positions. Other common conflicts are Cooperation Vs Individualism, Nature Vs Artifice, Law Vs Freedom and Emotion Vs Thought.

"No racism" seems a little out of place. Racism can be an excellent element in any story, especially if the groups consist of characters that are not yoshies.

As always, these points can be discussed in greater detail if asked about them. It would also be possible to give some story samples, for those panicking over plot points.

Good point. That may even be a part of the storyline for an RP. It sounds familiar...

i always look at the gender before i post to someone = P.

these rules are pretty nice for an adventure or battle rp, but for rps like "the yoshi daycare," only a few of these rules would apply. theres really no magic casting, or major happinings in a daycare, just, basically, getting to know yc members.

Hmm... What I'm about to post are more of suggestions from what I see a lot of you tending to do or some other things that I've seen elsewhere:

1. Posting in Action Format or Script Format may seem easy, but it is not how, say, book writers write their stories. And since role playing is a lot like book writing, it isn't really the best thing you can do... It doesn't look good to me, either. o.o

Example of Action Format; *Gets up and walks to the table and begins cutting fruit*
See? By looking at this, the actions aren't described very well and leaves you guessing on the scenery.

Example of Script Format;
Kasei: Huzzah! I make an appearance here.
Suishou: Shut up, we're only here because DP needs an example.

See? By looking at this, we can only guess in what tone they are using. We can't truly know what sort of emotions they're conveying.

2. Disjointed actions, disjointed feelings, and disjointed talking confuses me or doesn't look too great. Here is an example of two of those things:
I was tired. I walked along an empty road. I looked up and saw a bird flying in the sky. I was feeling depressed. The bird flew on. It was sunny out.

Here is what the post would read like without those said problems:
Feeling tired, I walked along an empty road. Looking up, I saw a bird flying across a cyan sky, sunlight playing across my face. The bird began to fly out of my sight, flying on to the north. Despite the cheeriness of the weather, I felt quite depressed.

Remember, describe setting, descriptions, and such before or after emotions. Don't just randomly go and do this: Description, emotion, setting, more description, talking, emotion, etc. And when you talk, say something relevant to the situation, not something random unless your chracter is crazy, or something, and shouting out random stuff is in their personality. And remember, don't throw in actions or emotions that are not true or relevant to the posts.

And another thing; see how I used a lot of ands in the first example and almost none in the second? Try and get rid of the ands and use commas. Like this:
Bad Example -
I walked alone and looked around myself.

Good Example -
Walking alone, I began to look around myself, studying my surroundings carefully.

3. Try staying in character, try not to change your character's personality with little reason. See, if your character suddenly experienced killing something after a peaceful life, their personality would change drastically, they may feel shattered, they may feel guilty and swear never to kill again and be on a vendetta against killing, or they may begin to like it and kill for fun, among other possibilities. That's one example where your character can change their personality with a plausible reason, other such instances may occur after a bad experiance, after a sharp realization of something, etc. But other than through such instances, your character should keep the facets of their original personality.

Let's say your character loves the world, is a very happy person, and hates killing. Your character wouldn't suddenly go around killing stuff or being a depressed 'oh I hate the whole world' kind of person on a whim.

I'll add more stuff as I think up more constructive critisism for role playing...
