Sierra, a twelve year old purple female Yoshi, was the adventurous type. She often explored the Island whenever the chance was given, and knows it better than anyone. That is, aside from the village elders of course. Today began the first day of spring, and the first day of a new year. The rains hadn’t come for a few days, so the ground was dry enough and the temperature warm enough to explore. She gathered some grapes, melons, and berries into a single strapped back-pack, then slung it around her shoulder as she darted out of her tree house, down the ladder, and into the deep jungle.
Sierra hadn’t gone far when she was stopped by her friend, Terra, an eleven year old male white Yoshi.
“Hey, Sierra!” Terra shouted from a few feet behind her. “Are you going exploring again?”
Sierra stopped and turned, then smiled upon seeing her friend. “Yeah, want to come along?”
Terra nodded and replied with a grin, “Sure, let me go ask first!”
With that, he turned on his heel and rushed to his home. Sierra began rocking back and forth on her heels as she hummed a tune. After several minutes, the bushes began to rustle and Terra appeared, pushing through them with his skinny arms. “Sorry I made you wait, Sierra, but I’m ready now!”
“It took you long enough,” Sierra said jokingly. She turned and continued through the forest, followed soon after by Terra.
Sierra was always head-strong. She acted tough and in charge, as if she could hold her own, mostly because she doesn’t want people to feel sorry for her for being an orphan. She was a real tomboy, but she could be as feminine as any other girl if she wanted to be. She had a long lock of blonde hair that fell down on one side over her gold eyes and as for her outfit, she wore a white bandanna over her head which covered her gold spikes, her boots were orange with gold trimmings and her saddle was the common red color as worn by most other yoshies.
Terra on the other hand was usually shy and quiet unless around Sierra. Sierra was really the only other friend he had that was of the same species. Otherwise, he would play with the Shy-Guys whom he lived with, and even sometimes participated in the frequent pranks they pulled on the villagers, resulting in him getting disciplined by the elders if he was ever caught. Since he lived with the Shy-Guys, he wasn’t a member of the village and walked barefoot. He had two locks of white hair that parted and fell over his sapphire eyes, white spikes along the back of his head, a blue saddle, and wore a necklace made of five Chain Chomp teeth, each of a different size. The middle tooth was the largest, and the only gold one, while the other four were silver. He’s often asked how he got the necklace, or who gave it to him, but he never replies with an answer. The only one he‘s told was Sierra, that he had made it himself when he killed a wild Chain Chomp which had been attacking the Shy-Guys. Since she didn’t believe him, due to his frail body, he proved this to her when he showed the dead Chomp to her which was now hung deep within one of the caves that the Shy-Guys lived in.
When the two started their journey, the sun was just peeking over the horizon, but now, the sun was directly above them.
“Hey, Sierra,” Terra called out. “Let’s take a break, huh?”
Sierra glanced behind her and shook her head in annoyance, but she slowed down for him anyway. “You need to exercise more,” she said when he managed to catch up.
Terra panted, leaning as he walked, dragging his feet and his hands on the cool, green grass, “You know I can’t push myself for very long, or I’ll have an episode!”
Sierra sighed, “Just try not to collapse or I‘ll leave you here for the Piranha Sprouts.”
“That’s not funny,” Terra said seriously with a glare in his eye.
“Oh, come on,” Sierra chuckled. “I was just kidding. You know I’d drag you back myself if that happened.”
Terra smiled, “I know, I know.”
The two kept silent afterward, as they were approaching unfamiliar territory. There were no signs of threat, but just to be safe, the two treaded quietly and cautiously.
“Terra,” Sierra said suddenly, breaking the silence. “Do you hear that?”
Terra who by now was on the brink of exhaustion lifted his head up, “I don’t hear anything.”
Sierra stopped and listened. Terra kept walking, not knowing she had halted and bumped into her, then fell back on his tail and screamed. “Ouch! Why did you stop all of the sudden?”
“Shh,” Sierra hushed, placing a finger to her nose. Soon, Terra heard the sound as well and rose to his feet with a bewildered expression. It was the crying of an infant Yoshi. “Come on, Terra!”
“Wait, don’t go yet!” But Sierra had already sprinted off and was soon out of sight. Terra sighed and fell on his face. “I’ll just rest my eyes for a moment.”
Meanwhile, Sierra was racing towards the sound, but it was quite difficult to hear, for the dense trees and ferns were bending the sound, making it seem as if it were coming from multiple directions. Sierra found herself in the middle of a clearing and looked around frantically for the source of the crying, but it stopped soon after she did. Finally, out of the corner of her eye, she saw something glimmer. She snapped her head to her right and saw something in a nearby brush reflecting the sunlight. She tilted her head, then cautiously approached the light. She reached her hands out and pushed away the foliage, then gasped and threw her hands to her mouth upon seeing the green eyes of a male baby Yoshi staring back at her. Just as quickly as she threw her hands up, so did the baby. When she brought them down, so did he. She giggled at seeing this, but instead of mimicking her laugh, the baby let out a quick sneeze.
The yoshi was lying between a pair of green shoes, whose tips were white and had a red clover on the front. The laces were golden, as well as the bottoms, though the bottoms were metallic and had a beautiful luster, apparently the source of the glimmer Sierra had seen earlier. Sierra bent over and picked up the baby, then cradled him in her hands. It was a peculiar creature, for instead of the small, soft scales native to a typical Yoshi, this one had very soft and warm pink fur, and a soft and furry white underbelly. It was also smaller than a typical infant yoshi, as it was only a few inches from head to toe.
Terra had followed Sierra’s scent and finally found his way to the clearing where she was, but while pushing past the brush, a branch slapped him in the nose, causing him to fall back with a scream. Sierra was too mesmerized by the strange Yoshi she held in her arms to notice. The baby struggled to keep his eyes open, but he was fast asleep before he knew it.
“What is that thing?” Terra asked upon seeing the baby, not thinking before speaking.
Sierra glared at him coldly and he ashamedly sunk his head between his shoulders. She turned her gaze back on the baby and smiled. She then looked at the spot where he had been resting and noticed an envelope under the pair of shoes.
“Terra, would you be a dear and get that for me?” Sierra asked as she nodded towards the paper. She scooted over so Terra could get by and reach down for it.
“Here you go,” Terra said, not taking his eyes off the strange envelope since the moment he picked it up.
“Could you open it for me?”
Terra sighed softly, but did as he was told. He ran his finger under the flap, but found that it had not been sealed, so he just opened it up and pulled out the letter. He anticipated Sierra’s next order and was about to begin reading the letter, but the words were in a different language.
“I can’t read this, it looks like it was writing by a human or a member of the Mushroom people,” Terra admitted with a frown.
“Oh, well, we’ll just give it to the elder to read to us.”
Terra noticed her voice was much softer than it usually was, and he became flustered. “Sierra, you sound kind of different.”
Sierra smiled as she looked down at the baby, “I do? I guess you’re right. I can’t help it though, I’ve never held a baby yoshi before. It‘s so soft too.”
Terra kneeled down and pet the infant’s belly and smiled when it yawned and scratched itself. “It is soft!”
Sierra rose from where she sat, followed by Terra. “Let’s take him back with us. You can put his shoes and the letter into my back-pack.”
Terra took the shoes from under the brush and unzipped Sierra’s bag, then placed them, along with the letter, inside.
“This turned out to be a really weird day,” Terra declared as he followed behind Sierra, who had started back towards their village.
Sierra walked carefully, so not to disturb the infant‘s sleep, “It certainly has.”
By the time the trio returned to the village, the sun had already gone down. They knew that the elders would be asleep by now, so they decided to wait until the next day to give them the note. Terra waved to Sierra as he ran back to his home, and Sierra also turned to go to her house. She carefully climbed the ladder to her tree house, and pushed the curtain, which served as the door, away with her nose as she entered.
She laid the baby down on her bed, whose cushion was made of a silk sack full of feathers, and a giant soft leaf which served as the blanket. She removed her backpack from her shoulder and sat it near the bed, then after picking up the baby again, she sat herself down. The moonlight through the window over her bed shone through and lit up the entire room, giving it an eerie and almost magical feeling.
After looking at it for a while, she finally rested her head back on her bed and put the baby next to her, then cuddled up with it. “I wonder if the elders would let me take care of you,” she whispered to it with a smile. “Even though my parents were taken away when I was a baby, I’m sure I could make a good mother.”
The baby let out a squeak as it turned over, then nuzzled under Sierra’s neck.
“You sure are small,” Sierra said with a soft giggle, “I bet you could sleep in one of those shoes that came with you.”
Sierra stroked the yoshi’s spike-less back as she thought to herself, then gasped suddenly when an idea for a name came to her, “Even if they don’t allow me to take care of you, I’m sure I can name you. How about Shoe?”
The baby squeaked again, as if it was replying and Sierra smiled widely, then hugged it close to her, “All right, Shoe it is.”
I'm not sure how long the entire story will be, but I have the general storyline thought up. For once, I'm actually typing these comments out instead of C+Ping them from deviantART. I say "Possible," because I may change some things later. The characters and key events will be the same of course. Critique and questions are welcome as always.
