Mercy, this nostalgia thing won't let go of me. It's inspired me too, and I want to draw, but since I can't find my sketchbook, I'll express my thoughts through writing~ The earlier version of Shoelaces is scrapped. However, characters from that version will return, and the theme is generally the same, but it led somewhere I didn't want it to. Anyway, I'm making this up as I go, so let's hope it turns out for the best. I already have a bit of an idea; this is pretty much a prelude to Toshi's Story. My Toshi, of course, not...you know what I mean.
The four seasons play a vital role in the Mushroom World just as they do here in our world. However, unlike our world, the Mushroom World is full of many mysterious things, as you may already know. This is the tale of a young Yoshi unlike any other, and how he discovers something that changes his life as well as the lives of those around him.
It all started in a village inhabited by yoshies on their native isle, with a young adventurous purple yoshi named Sierra, and her friend Terra, who is a cowardly orange yoshi.
At only twelve years old, Sierra has become very well known around the village for discovering new secrets that have helped the village and all who live in it substantially. Many of her discoveries have only been by accident, as she was just casually exploring the island without any knowledge of the secrets she would unearth.
Then there's Terra. As an outcast, poor Terra, who is no older than Sierra, had been abandoned when he was an infant. Fortunately, a group of ShyGuys discovered him and raised him as one of their own. However, the only things he is known for is his pranks and swindlings. Because of this, the elders of the village have forbade him to enter the village, for they and the ShyGuys have also always been on rather bad terms. Why? Nobody knows. Perhaps they are just natural enemies? Your guess is just as good as mine.
Now, it was quite a sunny day on the island when Sierra left her tree house. She had with her only her backpack full of grapes and a compass, though she did wear a white bandanna over her head with a tuft of lavender hair peeking through from beneath which fell over her eyes. As she walked, she was greeted by everyone she passed, but she had no time to talk today.
As she passed through the gates, she was greeted by Terra and a couple shyguys, one yellow, one white, who chanted and danced about Terra, who was much bigger than them of course.
"Good morning, Terra!" Sierra greeted with a beaming smile under her nose.
"G'day, Sierra!" Terra replied cheerfully, "Where ya headed?"
"Oh, no place really, just going wherever."
Terra tilted his head, "How d'ya not know where ya goin'?"
"Oh, Terra," Sierra laughed, "Haven't you learned by now? When your on an adventure, you don't have to know where you're going, you just go!"
"Oh, roit," Terra said, unconvinced, "Well, whateva ya decide, we're with ya all the way, roit men?"
The two ShyGuys chanted in unison, "Heyho!"
Sierra smiled, "Well, if you're up for it, the more the merrier!"
Sierra walked past them, and they quickly followed behind. Sierra glanced behind her at the three and giggled to herself when she saw Terra. Being raised by ShyGuys, it was no surprise that he picked up some of their habits, and that included their walking motions. He looked rather goofy the way he bobbed side to side with each step as they did. But, Sierra wasn't laughing at them of course. The ShyGuys have always interested her; their mischievous antics, their silly dances, and their quirky chanting sounds. Yes, Sierra saw things differently than her people did, especially the elders. She saw past their differences and looked at who they were, not what they were.
As the four walked, they entered the woods; a very familiar place to both Sierra and Terra, not to mention the Shys. It was always relaxing going through the forest; how the sun shined down through the leaves, dotting the grass below with spots of gold light, how the birds twittered and chirped, and how fresh and clean the air was.
They walked on through the forest until they came upon the meadow. There were many different flowers of various colors ranging from pinks to whites, and reds to yellows. They were sometimes scattered about the ground or gathered up together in big bunches, and they were fairly tall too; tall enough to cover the yoshies' legs. On the horizon, there was a great pine forest and mountains rising up behind them, reaching to the skies. Not too far ahead, they saw a stream with clear and clean water. They rested here for a short while and relaxed.
Terra lay down on his back with a ShyGuy on each side of him, and together they looked up into the skies.
"'Oy, Sierra?"
"Yes?"
"Ya eva want ta turn back time?"
Sierra, who had been drinking from the stream with her focus on it rather than Terra, rose up and turned to him, "What do you mean?"
"Ah dunno," Terra shrugged.
Sierra looked up to where Terra was and after thinking a moment, she replied, "No, I can't say that I have, Terra. What makes you ask such a question?"
Terra hopped up right from where he lay to a standing position, then said, "Well, Ah've always wanted ta see where I come from, you know that."
"Yes," Sierra began, "I know that. Maybe there's some way you can do that one day."
"Ya think so?"
Sierra nodded, "Sure, where there's a will, there's a-"
Suddenly, she heard a strange noise. She tilted her head and listened, holding her hand up to halt Terra before he was able to speak. She then began walking, following the strange sound. "What is that?" she thought.
It sounded like crying. It sounded like a baby crying! Recognizing the sound now, she took off in a sprint, the crying becoming louder and louder all the while. Finally, she came across a patch of abnormally large tulips.
Then, in the midst of the tulip patch, she saw it. A baby yoshi was staring right up at her with minty green eyes. She tilted her head, it tilted its. She tilted it to the other side, it did the same. Then, she brought her hands up to her mouth, as if she had just realized the gravity of the situation, and the baby mimicked her yet again.
"Why'd ya run off, Sierra?" Terra shouted from behind as he ran towards her.
"See!" the baby said, apparently trying to say her name. It couldn't pronounce her whole name of course. It was just a baby after all.
"Did you hear that!?" Sierra squeeled, "It said my name!"
Terra raised a brow, "Shuh didn't sound loik it."
Sierra ignored him as she knelt down near the baby. She bent over and picked it up, then cradled it in her arms as it looked curiously up into her sparkling silver eyes.
"I wonder where it came from," Sierra thought aloud. "Where's you're mommy, little one?"
"Buh!" the infant said.
A smile crept on both Sierra's and Terra's face as Terra admitted, "It is pretty cute."
"Well, we can't just leave it here out in the open. Let's take it back to the village."
"Oy, what's all this 'we' stuff?" Terra asked as he placed his hands on his hips. The ShyGuys mimicked him and placed theirs on their hips as well, if ShyGuys even do have hips.
"Oh, right," Sierra said, remembering that Terra was not allowed in the village. "I'll take him then."
"Roit, well, we better be off then," Terra suggested.
My, I'm sleepy. I'm stopping there for now, enjoy it for what it is until I update it. Ciao, and good morning. .zZ
