I'm probably going to be hung for bringing this up, but...
Personally, I don't see too much bad in either way.
As for the lack of voice acting in most Mario games and Zelda games, I'm actually quite fond of it. It has a bit of charm to it, playing as a mute. Usually, you generally feel the same thing Mario or Link or whoever is when you're playing as them, and it's fun to think of what they may be thinking. I actually favor it over voice acting, remembering that of which was done in Super Mario Sunshine. Don't get me wrong, I think they did a superb job, but I like the mute idea. So what if you have to read? As for an RPG, think how long it would take for them to say all the stuff that's written in the text? Plus, when they do talk, ("Thank you so much for playing my game") it's like getting a Christmans present to me. On the other hand, voice acting does help one relate to the characters easier. You can tell a lot about someone just by listening to how they talk, am I right?
And on a slightly related matter, after playing Yoshi's Story, I'm kind of hoping for their unique Yoshi language to return. Listening to Jungle Fever, one of the songs in the water/jungle level, and man, I'm loving it. Deep voiced Yoshies. I can't think of anything more hardcore.
Edit: Actually, Beowulf. Beowulf is pretty freakin' hardcore. (Not the movie Beowulf; the real one from the book/epic poem.

I guess I'm just too used to them not talking. If they started now, it'd be too strange. I guess I'm not up for a change of that caliber just yet.
I mean, Bowser only spoke once, and that was in Super Mario Sunshine, and then he never spoke again. Sometimes I wonder why, other times I just don't have to.
And I actually hope Yoshis don't have a real "Yoshi language" of their own. Not sure why, but I guess I don't want too many weirdos out there banking on that kind of fantasy. I don't know, I guess all I'm saying is that there's no need to be fixing anything that isn't broken.

Eh, I didn't mean for the language to be elaborated. That would be rather horrible, if you ask me. What I meant by the Yoshi language was the seemingly random gibberish they had going with Yoshi's Story. Such as, when the page turned, or when they sang. It was new, and it seemed to fit them. I thought it was the cutest thing ever.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with Link not having a voice. The day that he ACTUALLY gets a voice is when 999,999,999 Zelda fans burn Nintendo down while screaming, "Blasphemy!" Mario should only have very few voice acting moments, or else his voice will start to get annoying because of over-use. *cough*Sonic*cough* As for Yoshis, I absolutely ADORE the cute way they sing and talk. However, his current voice effects are not only classic, but perfect for this "Yoshi language". Perhaps one or two of those voice-effects could serve as a sentence. (with subtitles of course)
In all, Nintendo made a VERY wise decision on their semi-mute characters.

Well, obviously it is too late for Nintendo to give them voices given the lenght and depth of the series. However, if something new were to entirely rise (something new, original, and loads of fun), then I think voice acting would be a wonderful aspect to the game. It gives the character a whole new depth in what he's thinking, and even though it may not sound like us or it may not be what we would say in a certain situation, I feel that if Nintendo did obtain brilliant voice actors who voice over for the characters as well as they could act in real life, then the game would be a hit... of course, with a good plot line and some fun action, too...
[To WildARMs]: Yes, there have been times when Sonic's voice was annoying, but there are some games where it's decent enough. I personally don't mind it all too much.

Maybe I've been playing Brawl too much. Brawl made Sonic the most hated character in that game. i.e. cheap Final Smash, uber annoying speed, "You're too slow!"

I'm going to have to dissent from the crowd here and not only give Link a voice, but bring back that sassy personality he once had in The Legend of Zelda TV Series.
"Oh, look, I saved the kingdom again... How about a kiss?"

Well, Link has a voice, but doesn't want to speak. I'm pretty sure the reason for that is because it's an RPG. They want you to feel like you're in control over the hero. You can make him say what you want to. Same for Mario. The closest talking Link has ever done was in Wind Waker when you call for your partner. But with that you're still in control.
Also, Sanjo, apparently Nintendo didn't think it was too late to give Samus and friends voices. Which kind of sucked.

I suppose I could deal with an "excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me princess."

Old concepts now should not be altered. However, many times have the voices and personalities of old video game television shows changed for better or for worse (if any among you have witnessed the Godforsaken Kirby television show, speak now or forever hold your peace). I personally feel as though video game characters should not have accompanying shows, though the past cannot be undone.
...Though if you didn't crack up upon hearing "How 'bout a kiss... For luck?" "You've GOT to be kidding me.", you have no soul.
