IRC sucks, but if I have to use it, I like having my IRC NOT resemble anything that would remind me that I'm using IRC. For instance, my Xchat has a white background, black Arial Unicode font which is quite soft and warm looking, and it all makes it look just a little more cheery than a cold, black background with an emotionless single-width font like Fixedsys or Courier.
Aesthetics seem to be a big impact for me on this one for some reason.

Black background, white text, coloured nicks.
Monospace fonts are for people stuck in 1989.

White background, black text, Consolas Italic 8, coloured nicks.
I love IRC, but every now and then (Like when riding Chocobos in FFXI) I like to talk over Skype and spread my vast knowledge of raising Chocobos (Quick hint: Giving a Chocobo more than one Azouph green a day will result in a 100% probability of it being ill the day after), how much nVidia and their incapability to push out a driver that actually works with DX10 games and generally how my day at work went.
