Hey all! Wow, I really haven't been posting up my work, huh? Woops. =P
Well, here's something that I have been working on for a little bit. It focuses on a few characters I have created, including Sanjo. For right now, there are a few chapters, but I have been refining them and re-working them all, so this is really the only chapter that is finished! I wasn't quite sure which direction this would go in at first, but I just typed and let the words flow to wherever they wanted to take me, so here it is! But a little background, first:
This takes place many years after the time of Mario, Bowser, etc., where the land has been reshaped and renamed. Though it is still known as the Mushroom Kingdom, there are now towns within separate areas known as realms. Currently, though most of the people are not aware of it, trouble is beginning rise again. This is the same dark threat that tried to destroy the world years ago, causing the break-up of the Mushroom Kingdom into these realms. Will the dark figure succeed?
Chapter 1: Untraveled Worlds
The forest in the distance to his left mesmerized him; the fading purple glow the haze gave added only to its mysterious being. The valley that lay before him yielded a full green tint, stretching for miles and miles. He had never seen a sight so beautiful in his life as he walked through the grass, listening to the birds as they chirped happily under the shade by a nearby lake. Everything seemed perfect and in place; a gentle breeze blew by him, cooling off his body as he continued his journey. The land captured his mind and imagination.
He had no idea where he was going or what he was doing. He just wandered through the spectacle as if it were his own neighborhood. The sun reached its peak and began to descend as he reached the far edge of the woods. He could feel the haze shifting lazily by him as he stood in front of a sign that read: "DO NOT ENTER! IDLE WOODS DEAD AHEAD!" His mind told him not to enter, but he held no control over his body. He began to move cautiously into the woods...

"Oi! Get up you lazy slump!"
Sanjo snapped out of his daze. He had fallen asleep on the deck of the ship, the S.S. Frio. The red yoshi that had woken him up quickly began moving barrels around, organizing everything. "You know, you really should consider getting more sleep at night rather than in broad daylight. Everyone suspects you more or less."
"I know, Spazzi, I know. But still, can't a guy even get an hour to sleep? It's called a siesta."
"It's called 'Get-your-but-moving-before-I-kick-it'. Now c'mon, help me with these things."
"If you insist... why are we moving these barrels, anyway?"
Spazzi sighed, and looked somewhat ashamed of herself. "They've been rolling around a lot, so I'm trying to get them below deck so they won't knock anything over."
"... Spazzi, you are so weird."
She cracked a smile. "Yeah, I know." Sanjo rose and helped Spazzi roll the barrel to the pit. The waves shifted the boat back and forth. The ship was anchored just leagues away from a small port, waiting to finish the trip once the sun rose again. For now, it rested upon the waves, the sun just barely touching the horizon to light the rest of the world.
After several hours, the whole deck was completely clear of all barrels and crates. The sun was gone, just a few stars popping out early against the dark blue sky. The whole crew of yoshis were panting, leaning on the side of the ship and on each other for support. Spazzi was the only one left standing: "Great work, guys! This looks a lot better!"
One of the sailors looked up at her: "Yeah....phew, you really are a piece of work, you know that?... You're welcome here anytime..." Spazzi looked back at him with a wide smile.
"You know, we can do the pit tomorrow if you all want." The whole crew looked up, wide-eyed with panic: "NO!" Spazzi put her hand behind her head, rubbing her brown spikes, embarrassed by her behavior. "Heheh... just kidding..."
Sanjo was leaning on the railing of the bow, looking out towards the port. The buildings on the pier were lit up, acting as their own lighthouses. He wondered what was out there that was different from his home.
"So, first time out here, huh?" A light blue yoshi approached him and stood on his left. Sanjo chuckled for a second.
"You can read me that easily?"
"Eh, I just have a knack for these kinds of things, you know?"
Sanjo looked to his right, hiding his face. "Yeah, I know exactly what you mean."
"Well, take it easy on yourself, everyone is a rookie at some point. It's nothing to get ashamed about."
"No, it's not tha-... well, never-mind."
"Well, I don't know what's troublin' ya, but let me tell you this: Once you hit the shores of Beechwood, all of your bothersome thoughts will evaporate... just like a droplet of water on a countertop."
"For my sake, I hope so."
The foreign yoshi offered a hand. "The name's Alger." The hand looked rough and scaly as though they had worked hard for its entire life. Sanjo handed him his hand in exchange: "I'm Sanjo."
"Sanjo, eh? Sounds pretty foreign to me. Where you from?"
"Woodside. It's in the forest realm."
"Oh, so your one of those 'tree-folk', am I right?"
"Yep. I see your up to par with stereotypes."
"Eh, you've met one, you've met them all." He chuckled for a little bit, and Sanjo caught on, loosening up. "You all tell so many stories--too many, in my opinion--that really know how to get under your skin. You have any good ones?"
Sanjo thought for a moment, trying to figure out what to say. "...No."
"...Well, I guess I was mistaken..." Feeling he was not one to talk to right now, Alger walked away, but stopped before he went below deck. "Hey, kid. If you've got any troubles, best leave them to drown in the dark water. The blue waters in the day will color the sky--there's a new day to be held. Don't forget that."
Sanjo didn't bother to look back at him. "I'll try not to." He was too caught up in his thoughts to give a better response. Alger shook his head and continued down to the pit to speed up time until it was dawn. Meanwhile, Sanjo thought to himself alone on the bow: "There it is, a new town... I wonder how long I can stay in this one before others start catching on...-"
Suddenly, the boat shook fiercely against the waves, forcing him to fall to the wooden floor and roll. When everything was settled, he got back up, cautious of his surroundings. He walked back towards the edge of the ship, looking out on the waters. Stunned, the water was as calm as before. Slightly confused, he ran to the other side, and found the same result. He heard footsteps coming up to the dock. Spazzi and Alger soon appeared out of the darkness and ran towards him. Spazzi, being much faster and more in shape than Alger, reached him first. "What happened?"
"I have no clue... I was zoning out, so I didn't see anything. The ship just rocked vigorously and before I knew it, I was down on the floor."
"It's here."
Both Sanjo and Spazzi turned towards the wheezing Alger, his hands on his knees and his body bent forwards. A shot of fear overtook Spazzi's emotions. "What do you mean 'it'?"
Alger straightened himself up, standing tall with his arms folded. "There's been a monster in these waters for quite some time. It's been terrorizing different merchant ships that have been trying to reach this port for a few weeks, now. We thought it had travelled somewhere else, for no one has been terrorized for a few days... darn it! I should've known this was coming..."
Spazzi walked towards him and put her hand on his shoulder. "It's okay, none of us could have predicted this to happen."
Sanjo soon followed her sympathy. "Right. The only thing we need to worry about is if we are prepared when it comes back. You got any swords?"
Alger glared at Sanjo in utter shock. "You plan on fighting that thing with such a short-ranged weapon?! That's ridiculous!"
"Not where we come from. Spazzi and I know how to handle this. So, again, got swords I can use?"
"Yeah, below deck. I'll run and get it now." Alger ran below deck just as he promised. Sanjo turned to face Spazzi.
"You know what to do, right?"
"Of course I do. You guys are so lucky I'm around."
"Eh, I could handle this thing myself. I'm just not in the mood to and I want to get this over with." They both smiled, and Spazzi walked a few feet away to give the both of them space. Shortly after, Alger came running back with three swords in hand: one for each of them. Spazzi refused to take one. "Sorry, but that's not the way I fight."
"Now just a minute! Didn't he just say you two needed swords?!"
"Well, he had said he wanted one, but as usual, doesn't really care for what I think or say."
"Well, being unarmed is jus--hey!" Sanjo had swiped the extra sword right from his hands while he stood there in utter shock to Spazzi's response.
"Trust me, you'll want me to have this." Alger was confused by everything about these two foreigners, but submitted to his command anyway. Soon, a rumble was heard, and all three of them took a step back to ready themselves.
*Eh, for some reason, it won't space everything out like I wanted it to, so sorry if it's a little messy to read! Hope you enjoyed! Feel free to drop somebombs criticism on it!*
