Guitar Hero, Rock Band~
For people who dislike, don't play, or simply don't care about these two game series, functionally and physically, the two of them look exactly the same -- and they share an awful lot of similarities (in some ways, exactly the same.) However, for those that do, there's quite an umber of differences -- from the instruments designed for each game, the general style of note charts, the songs available, and the physical presentation itself, there's quite a number of differences that turn some people on to one and off of the other, in some cases very devoutly~
So how do you guys feel, and preferably, why? Personally, I prefer Rock Band -- I feel that Guitar Hero lost it's playful, fun soul at the point of Guitar Hero III and onwards, which was the point that Harmonix, the developer of the first two Guitar Heroes, was forced to split off due to EA and MTV getting involved -- and eventually passed their creativity onto Rock Band. Guitar Hero's physical presentation kinda bothers me, so punk-styled and aggressive and angry (that and the 60 FPS animations bother me for some reason.) That's only the tip of the iceberg, though, what with Celebrity characters and what have you.
Rock Band's style is so much simpler and straight forward -- and like the first two Guitar Heroes, feels fun and happy to play, not aggressive and angry and derogatory like Guitar Hero does. x3 That and I like how they often cater to lesser-known bands and not just the big-namers. Also, I like the quiet guitars more (possibly the only one in the world?)

Yeah, you've pretty much already covered how I feel about Guitar Hero!
Guitar Hero, to me, lost its charm once it was passed off completely to Activision. I really dig Harmonix's taste in music more. The tracks to me are so much more memorable than the track lists of the last couple Guitar Hero games (at least in my opinion). Like you said, I like how they tend to feature bands that are lesser-known.
Also, the 100% reliable weekly DLC releases don't disappoint! I'm very impressed with how much Harmonix has dished out in the last couple years. It gives Rock Band so much more variety with a near-endless library to pick and choose from. It seems more efficient than releasing a brand new game every year. It's the ultimate party game!

I prefer Rock Band. Guitar Hero tries too hard to be edgy and "metal", whereas Rock Band is more about the music. And speaking of music, I tend to prefer Rock Band's selection over Guitar Hero's, even if Guitar Hero III did have Knights of Cydonia.

It's possibly the only game where you can have "Hammer Smashed Face" by Cannibal Corpse and "Best day Ever" by Spongebob Squarepants side by side. x 3 Somehow I knew your response would be something along these lines... l3

I love playing Rock Band! I get to practice with all the instrument parts with that game, and plus nothing's greater than singing along with my most favorite alternative rock songs! XD Rock Band made my New Year's party a blast last year. We played that game for 6 hours straight right after 2009 kicked off! XD So, if it isn't obvious enough, Rock Band most definitely gets my vote!

Eh. I don't particularly mind either. I don't own any of those games, so I only get to play them when I'm over a friend's or something. They both strike me was party games and would probably get boring quick if I played alone. Though if the guitars were more like that Teh, it would be a looot more interesting.
I'd have to say I prefer Rock Band? Rock Band does have a little more mellow style and at least more... playing diversity, I guess, with the instruments and all. I usually get stuck singing, but whatever. That's done rather decently on its own. I'd probably enjoy the games more if I knew more of the playlist. XD

I'm a huge Rock Band fanatic as many know, so I am somewhat biased when it comes to finding pros and cons between both games (in other words, Guitar Hero sucks compared to Rock Band) but my main one is this; Rock Band is more realistic, whereas Guitar Hero isn't. Don't believe me? Alright, two words; Dragonforce intro. As Mat said, Rock Band is about the music, they love the music, and they want us to love the music they place into their game for us to gather with friends and jam, and it's still great fun even if Rock music isn't your thing.
Their huge library of downloadable content (talking 360 here) gives you a greater selection of songs to play and boosts longevity, thus you'll never bore of playing the same ones over and over, and you're guaranteed to find content that you love. Seriously, I found many new and awesome bands which I hadn't heard of thanks to them.
The Guitar controllers are much, much better built than Guitar Hero ones too. They're quieter, precise, larger, and contain more features, so it makes it all the more better if you fancy being your own bedroom rock star (which I admittedly adore doing, guilty as charged). Guitar Hero ones just never felt like they had any quality to them, but I will admit that they have incredible durability and life. My Guitar Hero 2 controller is a few years old now, and it still works like new despite having being dropped, stepped on, and strummed so many million times, unlike my Rock Band one in which it had to get replaced in just over a year of use. Though the Guitar Hero controllers have major flaws for the more serious players like myself; it never felt precise, nor was it quiet, even with Guitar Hero 3 and World Tour which are apparently apalling.
Sadly, no matter how much I kiss Rock Band's ass, people will continue to buy Guitar Hero. Why? It's Guitar Hero, it's what started off the new craze in gaming, and people will buy it simply because of the name, even if Rock Band has much much more to offer. Well, here in the UK that is.
To conclude, Rock Band all the way. It's simple, easier, much more fun to play, consumer friendly, epic, and it just offers far more than Guitar Hero will ever hope to achieve. Oh, and I'm actually awesome at it too, as big headed as that sounds.

I also prefer Rock Band. I like the songs in it much more than the songs in Guitar Hero. Rock Band also has much more DLC. Rock Band is more realistic and... I'm pretty much repeating what's already been said about it. ^^ I prefer Rock Band for the same reasons as everyone else that prefers Rock Band.

Neither, because I don't have the money to blow on either of them.
From what I gather they're both pretty much the exact same core game, anyway.

Wake me up when either game starts looking like this: image removed to not break the boxAhah, I saw that on Cracked. l3 Maybe this would be more up your alley! Yeah, and it kinda saddens me since Harmonix, creators of Rock Band, were the ones who started the Guitar Hero franchise, and the sudden recurrence of these games -- a lot of people say Rock Band's a knockoff of Guitar Hero, but they're the ones who made it in the first place. x 3 if anything, Activision knocked-off Rock Band by adding the other instruments to the Guitar Hero franchise (Something I thought was an unwise move.) Now they're gonna just water down their name more with Band Hero and crap. EDIT: Actually, I lied. it's all about Konami's ROCK REVOLUTION.
