Some of us over at YAF have been talking about trying this for some time now.
Affiliating, not a merge. Merging isn't fully possible, as these two forums have different formats.
It's not a critical change to either forum. Just a little image at the top of both forums leading to the other forum.
What do you think?

I don't see why not, honestly.

Ooh, so that's what the affiliation does? That actually sounds pretty useful. It'd be like neighbors living next door to each other instead of everyone crammed into the same house...
It'd be like a navbar, in a sense. Actually, placing it at the top instead of the bottom like you suggested would probably give it more exposure.
Come to think of it, we used to have an affiliate link at the bottom pointing to TYFN. It's still in the source, but it's commented out.

I thought the administrators here had something against affiliating with other sites, but I don't really care either way.

I think affiliating with them would be fine.

I've no quarrel with affiliating with YAF. The more the merrier, right?

It's too bad that the YAF admin doesn't seem to fond of YC.

Dama: So Soul is really that adamant? Would a warm reception from YC get him to change his mind?

Doubt it. That's the reason it all split up.

Still liking the idea of nuking both boards and creating one super board, but I know no-one will go for that, even if it would make things 99% easier, public relations wise.

Nuke? No. Merge? Well, I was actually looking into the concept for a while, mainly in my quest to explore options in revival (for both parties, actually). I think that ideally, the boards would indeed merge into one, but realistically, it isn't going to happen anytime soon. Not only do we have the forum leaders issue, but we might also have the problem of culture shock.
Regarding Soul, it's just that sometimes I like to assume good faith in the name of betterment for everyone, no matter how off-putting the other party may be. We want a positivist attitude. It will only help us in the long run.

12 replies in one day, looks good. Now we can definitely say both sides have many who want to affiliate. Still liking the idea of nuking both boards and creating one super board, but I know no-one will go for that, even if it would make things 99% easier, public relations wise. This is the easiest and only way to do something remotely similar to merging, yes. Are you guys willing to lose almost all of your archives though, and come together with YAF to start on a new slate? YAF is going to anyways, because the sites that's been there for 5 years is going down in one of the following months. However, an actually merge would require more discussion than this, between both forums. Right now, we should get affiliating settled.

I don't think a merge is a good idea; we're two different forums with two different styles now. It's like trying to join Italy and Spain. At least, to my understanding.
I don't mind affiliating, I mean, networking is what the Internet is about.

I'm going to be blunt, but if Soul is going to play this game then he has failed his members. Board managers bow to the wishes of their members, not the other way around unless the change can have detrimental effects on the community that aren't as yet seen by the members, and in this case this should be communicated clearly with the memberbase so they understand what this could do. This is affiliation, not a merger.
I don't think I could support a merge. Affiliation is fine and dandy. I'm all for building bridges.
A community doesn't exist unless a driving force creates, communicates and participates but it's the sound of the majority of members stamping their feet that can guide it. Stop that progress and the members will instead become the driving force for competition.

A poll is now available for voting on affiliation. See this thread.
