For some reason this topic had vanished, and most of the activity in #yc along with it. So, for the uninitiated - and those who forgot #yc existed - this is the thread to tell you how to join the channel and idle like a pro. People who just want the network and channel name, it's rr.fractalcast-networks.net (port 6667) and #yc.
First you're going to need an IRC client, such as mIRC or XChat. Javachat is still offline as far as I know, so you're going to have to use one of these instead. If you're unfortunate enough to be using a Mac, I hear Colloquy is decent.
Whatever client you use, you're going to want to enter the server details for convenience. In XChat, you can open the network list by pressing CTRL+S, if it isn't open already. Once its open, hammer furiously on the "add" button, and enter rr.fractalcast-networks.net/6667 where it says newserver/6667. XChat can be finicky so you'll probably need to press enter after typing it in or it'll forget everything. Add #yc into the favourite channels box.
If you're using mIRC, you can use this guide. Remember to enter the server details from this thread, as the YCNN guide is about a billion years old. That guide also has a lot of useful extra stuff that I can't be bothered to copy and paste in here.
As for joining channels, type in /join [#channel name] to join one. All channel names require a #. The most relevant channels to YC are #yc and #ycrp. If you want to see all the active channels on the network, type /list.
That's basically everything there is to joining #yc, unless I forgot something. Which is probably the case.
If you don't want to download a client, you can also use Mibbit. This method brought to you by Matoking:
