We've all made 'em (or at least I hope you have!). New years resolutions are promises we make to ourselves to get something done. Sometimes these can be big or small. Some can be overly ambitious, but who is to say that it's impossible?
What have you promised to yourself in 2011?
I have a couple of rather personal ones which I don't want to disclose, but as for the rest:
- Healthy eating. As last year, I'll be continuing this except this time around I'll be making some real world changes to my diet. I've lost 8 inch off my waistline in the last year and to be honest it's not enough and I believe I can go further. I cut a lot out my diet last year, now I plan on changing some of the more unhealthy options for healthy things. Breakfast can be swapped out for a start!
- Driving Licence. This year, I'll be working toward getting my driving licence. I've been very fortunate in my career so far that I've not required a car to do my job. I want to push my career further though and in order to do so this is a resolution I need to follow up.
- Advance my career. I love my job, but there are enough bugbears now that I've noticed that I could do with doing away with. After having spent the last four years of my life helping other people, and picked up on the fact that there is no promotion opportunities where I am right now it's time for a change. I want to work as a senior technician within a university. I love the education sector. It allows me to learn to use an almost limitless array of tools, machinery and equipment in order to allow me to support the establishment where I'd otherwise be limited within a business environment to only what we use. I also want to try my hand at being a Director of IT. I want to know everything about what my team does, what my boss does and how we can better work together to ensure the team is second to none. In other words, I want to spread my wings. Right now, I'm held back. This year, I hope to set myself free.
- Get certified. Tied in to the above, most of the establishments I want to work at require I be Cisco Certified. There is nothing stopping me doing this other than myself. This year, I hope to rectify this.
- Visit more places. One of last years resolutions was to regularly go outside my comfort zone. I don't believe I did this, although I have been to London and I've traversed a great deal of Birmingham by myself, and with friends. This year, I want to push this further by jumping in at the deep end, and actually begin to go abroad on solo trips, both for business and leisure. I want to see more places, and take more photos. I hope to begin doing this more this year.
- Move out of parents house. As of December, I am 27. I think it's time I moved out and began to do things myself. I've got to learn how the washer works some day.
- Cook more. I'm not very adventurous with food, at all. I eat a lot of bland stuff, even when I visit Big Wok or Wagamama. If I'm going to be visiting more places, I'm going to have a rather limited palate if all I want is noodles. I should probably uncurl myself now and actually begin being adventurous and play with my food instead of giving it to the dogs.
And that's it. This year is a busy one, but I believe that at the end of it, I will be very happy when I look back at all I've achieved.
Your turn!
