Have you all noticed that Yoshi has been teamed up with Birdo in recent games? Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: Double Dash, etc. Do you think that Nintendo is trying create the illusion that the former enemy Birdo may become Yoshi's closest friend?

Yeah, but I think Nintendo is trying to make them be more than just friends. I honestly think they don't fit together.

Y'know, I used to not care for Birdo at all, but that changed slightly after playing through Mario & Luigi. I'm not too sure why; she doesn't even play any significant parts.
I don't think there's anything going on 'twixt Yoshi and Birdo, though. Of course, I'm not Nintendo, so I don't have a lot of say...

well i think nintendo is trying to make people think they are getting into a relationship because of their many similarities such as their similar body compostion and how they are similar in a prehistoric way

No, sir, I don't like it. I actually remember reading on a very old Super Mario Bros. 2 manual yeeeeears ago saying that Birdo was born a man, but confused, and therefore wears a bow because he thought he was a girl. And I think now Nintendo is trying to hide that fact by making Birdo more and more feminine because it's embarassing to them. Who would've thought of that, anyway? Besides, I never did like Birdo in any game s/he appeared in, and Birdo's many voices always sounded awful. I just hope Nintendo would forget about having Yoshi and Birdo together. I kind of find it disgusting even if Birdo was female. Sorry if I disappointed any Birdo fans out there .

Nintendo should feel embarrassed for having Birdo's history be that way. One thing is for sure, the person(s) who thought of Birdo's history should get fired. That's just horrible!

Gee, I never knew all that about Birdo. That's just plain sick! I guess you guys dislike Birdo, lots of dirt in this topic. Be careful not to upset other character fans, lots of Yoshi fans are also Birdo fans too. Try your best to keep your complaints to yourself. Birdo is one twisted character, I agree with each of you!

Keep in mind that Super Mario Bros. 2 is kind of a strange condition. It was originally a non-Mario game called " Doki Doki Panic". It was converted to a Mario game for the U.S. because they thought the actual Mario 2 (known here as "The Lost Levels" was too hard, or too similar, or something.
Suffice to say, the Nintendo core team probably didn't have much to do with it, and the writers of the instruction book had even less decisive matter in the Mario Universe. That is, the instruction book is the only place that calls Birdo a guy. It also said that the Shy Guys were part of a gang called the "8-bits", which has never been followed up.
In short: semi-unofficial game=detachment from Mario continuity. Facts found in instruction book of said game=yet more detechment.
... Despite all that, it's amazing how many enemies from that game were worked into Mario mainstream, isn't it? Shy Guys, Sniffits, Bob-ombs... Though that's a bit off-topic.
~EDIT~ Wow, the board is really liberal with its smiley interpretation, isn't it?

Well, I think Nintendo doesn't care much about the background of their characters. I believe they focus on making the game fun to play, rather than creating a detailed story behind each character. Most of their games usually don't have much of a story behind them (the legend of Zelda being an exception of course; F-Zero seems an exception too), and if there is, it's usually a very simple plot with few, under-developed characters (when I say under-developed I mean they have little or no background). Just compare The Mushroom Kingdom to something like, say, Inuyasha (I'm NOT an Inuyasha fan or anything ) Inuyasha has lots of characters with very specific attributes. Even easier, just look at how drastically Nintendo changes Yoshi from game to game! In SMW, he was an eat-anything machine and couldn't lay eggs. In Yoshi's Island now he could flutter and lay eggs and pound the ground, among other things. In Smash Brothers he could fight like a pro. In Smash Brothers Melee we saw him change drastically from a cute dinosaur into one that resembled real dinosaurs a little more closely, and could now chew opponents (EWW!). In Yoshi's Story he could swim. In Super Mario Sunshine he dissolves if he touches the water!! Obviously this doesn't look as if Yoshi were a pre-defined character; Nintendo keeps changing him constantly in an effort to make their new games more exciting (although I'd prefer they would keep Yoshi the same all the time...). In Japanese, if you'd want to say 'he' or 'she', you would use the same word for both. This makes it hard to tell whether a character is a male or a female unless it explicitly says so. I've also noticed the Japanese like to play around with gender... Either way... There's something in this cute green dinosaur that I simply love ;D (oh so happy!!)

I think they could be friends... if Birdo helps Mario out or something. Because the two are sort of similar... in opposite ways. I know that statement made hardly any sense, but I'll try to explain. Yoshi spews eggs from under his tail and then throws them. Birdo shoots eggs out of her mouth, as seen in Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. They look a little bit alike, but I think Birdo would end up driving Yoshi, or any other living being, insane!

For me, Birdo is turning something like a "Yoshi female", or better, it would be another race. Really I'm not sure, but you can see a lot of differences among Yoshi and Birdo, if Birdo is a Yoshi female "for Nintendo" (I don't want any strange situation here), I prefer a Yoshi male. if Birdo is other race, isn't too strange one dragon and one dinosaur together like this?
