Some people even bought them uniquely to sell on Ebay! That is absolutely ridiculous and unethical despite the fact that it is a brilliant idea... Why are people so into GRAPHICS?? Maybe it's the idea that you'd have to get used to a new controlled that shooes people away. I know exactly what you mean. I care so much more about game play and entertainment quality than graphics. The way I see it graphics are a luxury, something that can be added after you have something that it exciting to play. Lets face it, if you have a game that has astounding graphics but is boring to play, and a game that has standard looking graphics but is a blast to play, which one would you choose? (that's a rhetorical question of course you'd choose the more exciting game)

Gah, I already spent two grand on this computer, why should I spend another six-hundred on a console that has similar hardware, and doesn't have that nice PC FPS control scheme I like? At least the Wii Remote has some interesting uses.

The Wii doesn't have it as easy as the cube. When you rethink it, we actually did know what was coming with the Cube. The 2nd year graced us with Mario Sunshine, StarFox Adventures, Metroid Prime, Zelda: WindWaker. We even knew what would kick off the third year, Mario Kart. This time around, the Wii is pushing out more games, more quickly. Launched with Zelda with Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy and Metroid expected in Q1 or Q2 2007. And then there's almost nothing. This presents the problem. We know there will not be a new Zelda game in the 2nd year, Nintendo just do not work that fast. And remember, Twilight Princess is a Gamecube game, end of story. Its a port that uses the Wii controller. It is not a true Wii game. Based on Nintendo's track record, it is highly unlikely there will be a second Mario, Metroid or Smash Bros game in the 2nd or even 3rd years either. What does it leave us in the long run? You cannot truly depend on 3rd party games either. For multiformat releases, the Wii's more limited hardware cripples it. Previously in such releases, the Gamecube versions offered distinct advantages. The hardware was inbetween the PS2 and Xbox and the disc format allowed faster loading times. This time around, the Wii just doesn't have the horsepower to keep up. And while it does have the controller, its uses in such games would always be 'tacked on' rather than an instrumental function of gameplay. So what do we see with the Wii? Its the dedicated 3rd party titles that may prove to be its lifeblood. But lets be serious. How many developers are going to really drop the BIG money and titles on such a console format. Is the lifeblood of the Wii destined to be full screen and enhanced versions of DS titles like Trauma Theatre, Phoenix Wright, Brain Academy and WarioWare mixed with a string of Virtual Console titles. This is the crutch of the issue. While a lot of these games are great fun, are they really worth paying full console prices, both hardware and software, over hand held ones? Would you really be happy playing such games hours on end from your sofa having been robbed of the mobility of the DS. Is the Wii truly a console that can survive on its own. Or is this in fact, the first console truly made to complement a second machine. I have my Xbox 360. With my Wii, it seems there is little I could really miss out on apart from the likes of Metal Gear Solid. I know quite a few people from completely non-Nintendo related boards who are excited about the Wii. But it is no exaggeration to say that all of them also intend to get a PS3 or Xbox 360. Just because we don't know what they've got planned doesn't mean they don't have any ideas. We'll see how things go, but I'm fairly sure that Nintendo knows what you know, Bry. I'm not too worried about it. Anyway, time will tell.

Given that the Gamecube came dead last in the last console war and new releases were pretty far inbetween, simple faith in Nintendo isn't going to make it come out on top. I'm a realist. Nintendo can have all the best ideas in the world, but its worthless if they don't release them.
On the Wii end, its been a bit of a disaster in Europe. It launched on Friday for those who didn't know. Nintendo have not shipped the amount of consoles they promised too. As such, there is not enough consoles to meet pre-order demands. Not by along way. Even though I had been told last month I was getting one on launch, it hasn't worked out that way because Nintendo failed to deliver what they promised.
I could be waiting as long as earlier January. And its expected to be impossible to buy a Wii off the shelf for quite a number of weeks as consoles are kept to supply the pre-order demand.
Zelda and the Wii points still got sent and arrived, just nothing to use them on. Its so bad, Nintendo, through Gameplay.co.uk where I ordered my Wii at least, have taken the rather unexpected step of offering launch pre-order customers who didn't get what they were promised a free game of their choice. I've picked SSBB, but I'm expecting an email at some point telling me I can't have that one.
BTW, why is it that the 'preview' button actually just posts the message?

At least it's not as bad as the PS3 launch in the US. They had bugger all when it came to units. I'm in the same boat, my Wii didn't come either. The thing is I think that the Wii is going to do much better than the gamecube from what I've seen. For one the Wii is completely new concept and it intrigues people. Many previous Playstation owners (from what I can see) aren't getting the PS3 but are opting for the Wii at this point. I think the reason there weren't enough units is because Nintendo underestimated the number who would want it, so this could show that Nintendo are doing solidly for the numbers who want it.

I'm actually not concerned I didn't get the console as such, more about the lack of information I got from the retailers over the whole mess. Its worse then what happened with the PS3 or Wii in the US though in a completely different way. It is not that there weren't enough units to meet demand. There wasn't of course (what's new there. There wasn't enough N64's or Dreamcasts to supply demand either and they sold out on launch), but the situation has been intensified a great deal because Nintendo delivered less units than they promised. What's happened with the Wii is that Nintendo promised X amount of consoles to the retailers in late November (around Nov 17-20), thus retailers contacted customers to tell them if they had gotten the console or not. I was to be one of the lucky ones having pre-ordered in early October. see here: Now, a mere 3 days before the launch, Nintendo actually only shipped Y amount of consoles which was less than the promised X. And so customers who had already been contacted and told they were getting a launch console (like me) find out the day before or on launch day itself that actually, they aren't getting one anymore. That's the difference. People weren't guaranteed they would get a PS3 on day of launch, showed up and found out they wouldn't. This is why Nintendo have gone to the extreme step of offering people (from some retailers) free games as compensation. Because, basically, they screwed up and haven't delivered what they had committed to doing so.

I'll get a Wii: Yoshis won't be in PS3/Xbox 360 games. But I don't especially wish Nintendo to be the "top in the sales" or anything like that. If people enjoy playing Wii for years and Nintendo earns enough money for its employees to live happily, I feel that's enough.

Pff, I'm not 'worried' about anything at all. I'm just a realist. I'm quite happy if the Wii only has a dozen amazingly fun games. Thing is, video games are a business. They have to generate money in the long run. Hopefully the Wii will pull another DS, but that is by no means certain. Smart companies don't count their chickens before they hatch. Edit: Low and behold, there is already trouble on the horizon... uk.wii.ign.com/articles/750/750001p1.htmlI think their case is minimal in context, but its not good news.

It seems like you're being rather pessimistic, honestly, but I do agree that this hasn't been as pristine as it could be.
The fact is, from what we've seen, Nintendo wouldn't have had enough consoles to meet demand even if they had released as many as they said they would have; even in the US, where we were only able to pre-order around, September, was it? But they did it once, stopped, and even with that, everything was bought up quickly, and people have been camping for the later shipments. While I agree that the situation is a bit worse in the UK, it almost sounds like stores wouldn't stop letting people pre-order, and then even after that, didn't start fulfilling pre-orders from the beginning of the list, but I may be wrong on that second point.
Also, from what I remember hearing, wasn't the Wii going to be profitable out of the box? As opposed to the other consoles, Nintendo was supposed to be making a profit off each system sold, since they need to make sure that they stay a games company, since all of their fans and their employees want to continue on. Yes, video games are a business, and Nintendo seems to be doing their best at remembering that.
I do agree that the suits on Nintendo are a little bit of a problem, but I seriously doubt that they're going to be made to stop selling them, especially with the demand that's out there. How would anyone benefit from it? Well, ok, Sony and Microsoft would, and I'm sure Sony would love to make up for the fact that they don't have any PS3s out in Europe, but I don't think it will go that far.

That's not how pre-ordering works in the UK. There are no limits on pre-orders. Pre-ordering is not about getting a console when they are released, its about making sure you get one as soon as possible.
The stores make a list and as stock comes in, the consoles are given to pre-order customers in the order of which they reserved their console. The sooner you ordered, the earlier you'll get one. Even now, you could go into a shop, say you'd want a Nintendo Wii, and they'll say sorry, we don't have any. "Would you like us to reserve one for you as soon as we have available stock for you?"
Honestly, I think the US way of pre-ordering is quite silly. Its limited to the number of consoles so you have a race to get a pre-order with people camping outside to do so etc.
I did not pre-order a Wii expecting to get one on launch. I pre-ordered because I knew it would be just about impossible to just buy one for the first month or two.
What the stores do is when their allocation of consoles is confirmed by Nintendo, they will contact the customers on the pre-order list, earliest order first, and inform them they pre-ordered early enough to get a console at launch. And the people who didn't pre-order early enough will also be informed.
The problem is that at the last minute Nintendo could not, or did not, deliver the amount of consoles they had allocated which is why the people who had already been confirmed to get a console, based on numbers given by Nintendo to the stores just weeks before the launch, could no longer be supplied.
Oh, and just to show I can be positive: Nintendo has announced that the Wii console has sold out in Europe, with 325,000 units snapped up in the two days following last Friday's launch.
That means the Wii now holds the title of fastest-selling home console in history across Europe - and not just in the UK.

Wii all the way. Who cares about good graphix if the game sucks? The Wii's got new technology to make it FUNNER, and the PS3 got new technology to make it PRETTIER... not saying PS3 games are boring, they ARE fun, but not as much as the Ninty Wii.

The Wii. It's the cheapest out of the 3 new stations, and Yoshi games including SSBB will be for it. Yes, I'm cheap, deal with it. I may not show it, but Yoshi is the best thing that happened to video games... since I dunno. Look at all his awsome fans! Who else got fans like these! TRIPLE BONUS MULTIPLIER ! ! Wii ftw.
But...
I'm a fan of PS games. I dunno, it has a better variety of games I guess. Nintendo... well, I only liked their yoshi games. None others. Only Yoshi games. Not even Mario games without Yoshi. Just as long as it has a freaking YOSHI in it. PS, well, there's a lot to choose from. Heck, if the game looks cool I buy it. and it's usually good.
So... cheap Wii, or super-expencive yet awsome PS3? Hmmm...

From what we have seen, market wise, Wii is currently throwing down the PS3 by a mile, and the PSP is becoming because the DS is better and also innovative.

Oh, this one is easy for me. Nintendo. Hands down. I grew up with Nintendo, and Nintendo has brought some of the happiest memories for me, in my otherwise dreadful childhood. I support Nintendo, and only Nintendo. All of my favourite games being from Nintendo. Nintendo ALL THE WAY BABY!!! xD Besides, the Wii's got awesome features, such as WI-FI and whatnot. Nintendo ftw!!! xD. ;D
