In Yoshi's Story, every single Yoshi in that game hatches from an egg. And when you get the little Yoshis in Super Mario World, all three or four of them hatch from eggs when you get them.

but that's because they were trapped in the egg by bowser!!! its saying it in my images. and i think about it, we dont even know if dragons hatch!
yoshi is hatching because bowser made eggs and trapped yoshi in it a yoshi can have wings. this means he could be a dragon. have you seen a normal dinosaur fly?

have you seen a normal dinosaur fly? Yeah, it's called a Pterodactyl. Well, I haven't technically seen one, but I have a model in my room. And I mean the baby Yoshis that you hatch. The ones you feed and they grow bigger.

So you're saying a Pterodactyl ISN'T a normal dinosaur? Just because it can fly and has wings? Typical...
I do recall that yoshi's do hatch from eggs. Maybe the reason why the Yoshi's in that game got trapped in the egg was a way for Bowser to keep them out of his way maybes?
Also, i'd like to add, maybe you shouldn't follow the facts that ONE game from many provide, Yoshi has been in more than ONE game, so maybe you should research the rest to see what THEY make Yoshi out to be.

Maybe "trapped in eggs" means delayed hatching. Maybe they were born in the eggs and Bowser just trapped them so they couldn't hatch until Mario saved the day maybe? Sounds likely.

According to a book I have Pterodactyls aren't dinosaurs, they're just from the dinosaur time. Maybe I'm wrong 0_o I don't think that bowser "delays hatching", he simply traps the yoshi in an egg.

Can I ask why we need to make real-world sense out of a video game that has mushrooms that make you bigger, pitfalls all over the place, little mushroom men, magic-using turtles with swirly glasses, floating blocks that spit out things, flowers that make you shoot fire, and millions of other nonsensical things? =\

Why not? It's fun and seems to have gotten out so really intereting ideas, just a fun debate, what's wrong with that?

We've seen in SSB that yoshi can transform into an egg at will(or was that melee). SMB also stated that the koopa's were capable of black magic so there's another explanation.

Hur hur, Pterodactyls are pterosaurs, not dinosaurs. *used to be a dinosaur nerd* ;B
This debate sorta reminds me of another debate over what kind of dinosaur Dino from the Flintstones was.
This following info is what I imagine Yoshis would be if they had to be classified as a type of dinosaur.
Since the long tongue and the ability to breathe fire under certain circumstances isn't known to be a feature of any other dinosaur and/or reptile, Yoshis can be its own kind of dinosaur with its own family.
Its body structure like, PFY said, seems to be like that of an Allosaurus or Compsognathus, which means it would be under order Saurischia. It's suborder would be Theropoda, since Yoshis only have three toes. It could be a Carnosaur, but one of the defining traits for that infraorder are a "long, narrow skull," which Yoshi doesn't really have. Other dinosaurs in that family include Allosaurus and Becklespinax. It could fall under family Coeloridae, because much of the defining traits for that group aren't complete. Other dinosaurs in that family include T-Rex and Compsognathus. Then again, Yoshis can always have its own infraorder, because its body structure differs in ways from the other therapods.
In a taxanomy-ish nutshell, Yoshis could possibly be: Dinosaur > Saurischian > Theropod > Coelurid > [unknown family]
(Err, you can thank Jurassic Park and my aunt for all that dinosaur mumbo jumbo. She bought me a huge 1,000+ page book about dinosaurs when I was younger. =P)
Yeah, done with that.
Of course... Yoshi could just be the generic dinosaur with tinges of imagination and creative cartoon-y goodness thrown in, resulting in its own species, which is what I believe completely. The interpretation is up to the player, and that's mine. ;P

Maybe he's just called "Super Dragon Yoshi" because he's the main Yoshi, and he's the one that can use all the different colored shells anyways. Doesn't every other color only get one ability from the Koopa shells?

There's more study involving the translation from Japanese to English.
The saddle could possibly be a shell of sorts, since it has no straps or anything.
