Ive been talking to my brother about this thing for a couple weeks, and i decited to put it here on descussion. So the riddle is, what do you think yoshis are?
Ill give you my thought: When i acculy came here i thought that yoshi's couldent have hair, couse they were lizards. Well, now i think they can, becouse it gives you that feeling, that you are different, unique, your own. I never was against clothes couse they acculy are almost like human's, we think, we eat, we sleep! And we can think about what clothes to put on. Im still agains little noses (it has become way over its line), the yoshi has its original form, even with clothes or hair, but they just don't go to anykind of face lift or something.
What do you think?

There have been quite a few debates about this. Some say they're frogs because of their tongues (wtf?), some say they're lizards because... well, i dunno why, but the main one people say is the fact they are, probably, dinosaurs.
They actually refer Yoshi to be a dinosaur so... yeah.

Yoshi's are thought to be Dinosaurs, there are a lot of references to Yoshi being a dinosaur so that's what people have come to believe, as do I. The hair, clothes and that is all down to character, where they came from who they are etc etc. About small noses, that's just how people draw them, smaller noses and bigger eyes, it's their style and for the most it works.
Just a quick questions why did you spell clothes "glothes"?

well it's not a matter of "i think" it's a matter of "i know" the fact is, yoshis are dinosaurs, not lizards. we have clothes and hair cos it gives us more of a characteristic and originatlity.

This subject is actually fairly interesting, and it would be something that through a community would mean a hefty debate. For Yoshies in and of themselves have many diffrent attributes throughout many phylums in the kingdom of Chordata. Due to this, their frames are similiar throughout each method; diffrent pieces of the body seem to match with oppisite qualities, lapping two diffrent classes over the other. Yet there is one large point that comes into play by this discussion, that of the human imagination and what thrives inside of it. Likely the creator of the creature would never trully take into consideration the speices of Yoshi itself. In fact, there was likely influence but the build would come from some inner source; such as the characters that we create, for we find our refrence and then build from there. Sort of like the blueprint to the building, there is always an inner-structure before the final walls are put down. It seems though that by some evidence, the factors of Yoshi were laid in a reptillian or amphibian presence. For while Yoshies tongue is existant, it also works like a frogs would, coming out to capture its prey before pulling it back in. This trait is peculiar, merely because it leads to the question of its stomach and the value of the food that is placed inside of it. As well as this, there is another section which makes it mark like none other: this falling upon the size and shape of the nose. Why the nose has grown so large in Yoshi is a strange occurance, for it seems to never fully go into use; therefore the guidance is misconstrued. However, this aspect might state that Yoshi is bred with enlarged Olfactory Sacs, the part of the mind which obtains the ability of scent. If such has any true background remains unknown, highly because the nose is without any defined "bodily" placement besides being one of the most recognized features by all of Yoshi's fans.
Finding a definite hold for Yoshi seems quite improbable, due in a matter that the creature is with-held between parties. For while it may have the workings of Amphibia, it is as equally digested in the suit of Reptillia. Amphibians are usually only suspectable to moist temperatures and risings; yet, Yoshi can go anywhere at anytime without needing any certain source of well-being. Reptillians are born usually with the makings of a "split-tongue", but Yoshi has the means of a rounded; allowing it to capture food, as said, with the skill of a Frog. Yoshi also comes equipped with eye-lids, something that still remains foreign in the name of Amphibia. It is a rarity to find such soul within the class, yet there are few exceptions to certain types of Geckos and Lizards. While a few parts of the Yoshies body can be disfigured and debated, there are those that remain more than just mysterious. For example, the arch in the back of Yoshi shows the connection between bone and tail; which is utter proof that he belongs to Chordata. Thus giving one simple quality, yet the appearance of the tail is enough to throw off countless remarks. It's saddled, easy to ride, that of which is unfit to all classes beside Mammalia. Fortuantly this is the only addition that causes large question, the legs and the jumping ability still focus their attention on the other two classes.
As you were saying above, it's intriguing to come to a board and see people manipulating the "Classic" visions of this character. However, due to the birth of fandom, mankind devulges into their own imagination. Yoshi has become a part of life, due to the means that Nintendo has published him through. One large probelm on two sides of the Yoshi Fandom fence seem to state that some believe his body should be left alone, while others constantly continue to change it to their likings. Yoshi was born out of imagination, pure train of thought; his statue was found in some unlikely place that still remains near impossible to retrieve. Those of today still play with Yoshies infrastructure, adding anything from "clothes, hair, eyes, powers, abbilities". If this should be done, well thats up to those that commit the action; there will always be the type who wish for change not to occur and those that bring it forward. Yoshi will always be a part of our lives though, due to the fact that it brought us together and kept us intact. As a group there is much to offer through explanation of the beloved character, yet all minds percieve diffrently; from as to where, when, why, and how.
Yet, if Yoshies are spoken to be Dinosaur, then put in the matter they likely could be. For, that would give a reason as to why their tail and back are completly arched. Something that was very well seen through majority of Dinosaurs in the times. If it would be, the size could be diffrent merely due to evolution and influence giving to the creator. It makes more sense, because the spikes on the back as well were highly known for the Dinosauric trait; thus placing this little creature within the class that Dinosaurs had roamed from.

Contention, your reply was quite interesting. The fact that nintendo has made the yoshi by imagination. They probably thought of it becoming something like a dinosaur, becouse they have the spikes, tail, little arms, and big dinosaur legs! It looks something like a cute form of T-rex. edit: well it's not a matter of "i think" it's a matter of "i know" the fact is, yoshis are dinosaurs, not lizards. we have clothes and hair cos it gives us more of a characteristic and originatlity. That's a fact, now that i think. I searched all over internet, and i found out that Yoshi is a raptor, without teeth, or short toung.

But that was only one instance where they referred Yoshi as a dragon. From then on, he was always known as a dinosaur.
So yeah, that's my belief. He's a dinosaur.
However, for the most part, I remember getting an un[/i][/sub]interesting email from Nintendo regarding Yoshi feet. Here goes:
Well, okay, I got bored and decided to email Nintendo on what the heck Yoshi feet looked like. Getting back to the point, though, is that Yoshi's qualities are pretty much left to the imagination of the player. We all have theories of this and that about him, and they all can't be entirely wrong.
I guess it's just that some makes sense more than others.
Yeah, Nintendo can be shady like that.

but, on super mario world the first world is called dinosaur land, or island.....anyway, the piont it has dinosaur in it, and it is the island that you first find yoshi in, so technically nintendo sortta dropped a hint that yoshi was a dinosaur.

Alright everyone, here is my opinion on the subject.
Yoshi is neither a dragon, dinosaur, lizard or amphibian. He may be related to such animals, but that doesn’t mean it is one. Yoshis share several characteristics of said animals, but at the end of the day, a Yoshi is still a Yoshi. Its own being. Yoshis are much like people. They have their own cultures, are self aware and are intelligent. Now, humans may be related to monkeys, but we don't call ourselves that. We could live in a place called Monkey Island, but we would still be humans. Yoshis have the build of a dinosaur, the powers of a dragon and the tongue of a lizard, but a bear is not a wolf, a lion is not a tiger and a Yoshi isn't anything but a Yoshi.
Now you can believe what you want. You have a right to your own opinion, but this is my view on the subject.

Indeed, you see Yoshi in many different perspectives wherever you go, so it is building up its own classification I guess you could say.

Throughout reading lots of official, and unofficial documentation (Strategy guides, game books, sites here and there) I think I can safely say that 8 out of 10 times, Yoshi is perceived as a dinosaur, and in my humble opinion, well, theories, Yoshi resembles a friendly member of the Velociraptor family, which has been guessed by several experts to have been very quick and nimble at catching it's prey. Velociraptors have 2 feet, and fairly small hands/claws.
Another theory of mine would be that if Yoshi was conceived and was supposed to be part of the dinosaur family, another alternative, if not from the Velociraptor family, Yoshi would probably have been either an Allosaur, which research suggests that they stood around 5-10 meters tall, or the much much MUCH smaller Compsognathus which as research suggests, stood around 30-60cm in height, spat a highly venomous fluid to aid in catching it's prey, and swarmed in large numbers. Both of which had tails the length of their body much like the rest of the entire dinosaur family tree.
(Ever since I watched Jurrassic Park as a child, I've been very interested in the various multitude of creatures that swarmed Earth over 65 million years ago. I dunno, I just enjoy history for some crazed reason.)
My theory of Yoshis roots lies within the dinosaur family.

Yoshi is Yoshi. They can't be dinosaurs, as dinosaurs don't have long tounges. They can't be lizards, because lizards are small. They can't be dragons, because Yoshis can't breathe fire on command.
However, they do resemble dinsosaurs in several ways. The biggest resemblance seems to merely be their looks. However, there are still more resemblances. They both hatch from eggs. Several dinosaurs are illustrated as being green, and that's what color Yoshi usually is. Ah...I can't think of any more, however.
Yoshis also resemble a dragon, as said before. However, there aren't many similarities. Dragons generally breathe fire, but the only time I've seen Yoshi do that is in Super Mario World, and even then he could only do that if he ate a red koopa. Dragons usually can fly too. Yoshis usually don't fly, and when they do, they don't have dragon wings. Sure in Super Mario World there was Dragon Land, or whatever it was (I can't remember >_<), but I think I've also heard Dinosaur Land in one game too. But I can't remeber if this really was a level in a Mario game...
The only resemblances I see to lizards is that they have scales and are usually illustrated as green. But then again, I've never seen scales actually on Yoshi...
The only resemblances I see to frogs is they have long tounges and are usually illustrated as green.
Despite all these similarites, I still think Yoshi is simply Yoshi. It's its own species. Have you ever seen dinosaurs, dragons, lizards, or frogs spit out juice like Yoshi does in Super Mario Sunshine? Have you ever seen dinosaurs, dragons, lizards, or frogs allow someone to ride them? Or, have you ever seen dinosaurs, dragons, lizards, or frogs wear shoes? The answer to all these is no. Yoshi is Yoshi, and will always be Yoshi.
Oh, and sorry I made all these sound like facts. They're not really, it's just my theory that Yoshi is Yoshi, and not anything else.

This thing about you guys saying Yoshi is Yoshi, well you're pretty much damn right in explaining it. Sure, he resembles a lot of creatures like Lizards, Dinosaurs, Frogs (but still, wtf?) and Dragons, but maybe that's what the crazy mind of Nintendo are all about. I guess you could say that when they created Yoshi, they didn't want him to belong to a specific family, except a unique one, known as a Yoshi. So although i think he belongs to the dino family, i can't go around saying he IS a dinosaur to anyone, because, technically, he ain't, he's a mix of a few (cross-breeding, lolz). As Greenery said, tongue of a Frog, body of a Dinosaur, power of a Dragon and... i still can't see where Lizard comes in, but you all gotta think when you say "what IS yoshi?" ... well, he is a Yoshi! Simple eh?
I'll always believe that Yoshi has more dino characteristics than the other kinds though, and to be honest, i can't see ANYTHING that makes him a Dragon-kind at all, but you can't destroy the fact that he's a unique breed and technically doesn't fall in any catagory.

To classify him if I absolutely must, I'd say dinosaur given his general appearance and style.
I found a frog yesterday -- it was sitting on my driveway. So squishy and cute they are, flailing in your hand to escape -- I let him out on some dew-covered lawn when I was done.

About the hair thing, since Yoshi's have a very small back head, they probably can't grow a lot of hair. Though they could still grow it out as long as they want.
In the Mushroom World bald is opposite for the Toad's people and Yoshi. There's more bald people there than on earth.
Having them stand upright is cool, making them look more human. The only problem is when people elongate everything, so that it's basically a human with a Yoshi's head.
Wearing clothes is fine, it's just that they don't wear anything in the tropical environments cus it's a lot hotter.
They're their own species. It's like how dragons, lizards, and dinosaurs all look reptilian. Looks similar, but no.
Their colors show nothing of they're personality. Color pigmintation in there food changes their skin. But unlike Mario Sunshine where it's instant, they would have to eat a lot of the same kind of fruit to change color.
In a lot of my art I show Yoshi's wearing clothes and swords. That's only cus it looks cool!
