Alright, I can pretty much make myself available any day Monday through Thursday from 4:00pm to 3:00am EST. Weekends are iffy, but I'm usually available all day Saturday.

So out of sheer boredom and curiousity, I tried to put the schedule together (sorry if I stole your thunder, Blitzzoshi). It seems like Fridays or Saturdays are the best days for getting the most people involved (timezones and all). Of course, thats not to say that we can't have change up when the meetings are, or even have multiple meetings on the same topic to make sure everyone gets into at least one discussion. If you'd like to see what the schedule looks like, let me know!... though it was made using iCal, so it looks really messy =P

I could even give you a more specific schedule for me if you like, although there are really only a few Fridays and Saturdays that's you'd have to worry about for me. In addition, someone has to decide in the quite near future: are we using MSN or IRC?

As usual, I'll take part. I used to run all my meetings on Google Wave, until they closed it. :/
Used IRC for everything since.
...
I'll look at getting the Java client operational again at some point. My workload for the weekend is maxed out so it won't be until one of the weekdays next week but not promising anything as I'm pretty snowed under with work in free time for the next three weeks.
I can do MSN though.

I'll be able to join in on this as well! Sounds like a great idea! I'm usually free on all weekdays from at least 6pm to midnight, central standard time. ;D
As for chat options, MSN will fit me just fine. XD

Oddly enough, all this talk about trying to revive YC is drumming up activity itself....

Oddly enough, all this talk about trying to revive YC is drumming up activity itself.... That's the idea, yes! I'll look at getting the Java client operational again at some point. Could be interesting. The idea is to make the meeting as accessible as possible. MSN requires everyone to have an account, although most folks here already have one. IRC doesn't require an account, but it can seem strange to people who have never used it before. We might need to run a poll or something similar. If you'd like to see what the schedule looks like, let me know!... though it was made using iCal, so it looks really messy =P Can you upload the .ics file someplace?

There ya go, Blitz! I think we can attach things straight to the post? We'll see when I post this! All times are according to EST (-5), just because that was a bit easier for me. I believe everyone was modified, but let me know if something looks out of place! Nota Bene: If you are able to see the labels, can you tell me if they read everyone's names, or if they read something else. I'm not sure how it will open up in other programs, so if you see stuff like "Game Over" and "Audio Production" instead, let me know! Attachments:

So I tried this here .ics file in Google Calendar, and I see more or less every day with an event from 5pm to 12am with a title of "Brute".

Yeah, all I'm getting here is Brute. Since .ics files are constructed using plain text, this is also confirmed by opening the file in a text editor and just seeing the one Brute event in there. Strangely there also seems to be a "New Event" lodged in there as well.
I'll see about creating one myself.

Well, that's official: never trusting mac programs again. =P Sorry about that mix up, I'll see if I can transfer it over to something else while I'm on the bus tomorrow.

I've never used this script before, but in any case, maybe this would be more suited if we all registered (no registration needed) on here and put down the times we're available? It's a bit beta, but in any case it's probably a hell of a lot easier than distributing iCal files around, then wondering if you have the latest one. :s rr.fractalcast-networks.net/pub-calendar/index.php?action=display_monthI think whatever we do, we're going to find it difficult because we cannot cater for alternative timezones unless whatever we try has a feature which allows for it. Blah, Microsoft Exchange is built specifically for multi-zone unified communication. It is absolutely perfect, alas, there is no free version, and not many others than me have access to full blown Microsoft Outlook.

but in any case it's probably a hell of a lot easier than distributing iCal files around, then wondering if you have the latest one. :s Actually, the thing about iCalendar files is that if you can put one up on public webspace, other people can point their clients to that web address and get live updates without having to manually download anything. Hmm... Pink, we need something with a timeline view. Agenda/month view isn't going to cut it. Most programs handling iCalendar should be able to show a timeline, but I don't see such a thing in the web calendar you posted. I think whatever we do, we're going to find it difficult because we cannot cater for alternative timezones unless whatever we try has a feature which allows for it. iCalendar supports timezones.

I think if anything we'd need to take a SaaS approach here. If we require members who want to join in install a program to parse iCal files then it means we've overcomplicated things. What I set up this morning is only what I found in a quick search and is by no means definitive. I tried out two other pieces of software very quickly too, but they were too complex so ended up staying with what was there. Additionally, if we're going to do this, it might be an idea not to add recurring times for other people? I dunno who repeated my date several times, but I have a very large update to do on Yoshi Lore next weekend, I'm at a wedding the weekend after, and I'm in Birmingham the weekend after that, which is why I only put the one in. I do have a life offline too you guys know. :/

Yeah, that was me. Sorry!
The main thing about the iCalendar file is that for now we don't need anything super fancy - we only need one person to coordinate the meeting times. Once we get further along we can look for other solutions.
One thing I should point out - Pink, have you ever tried Drupal? I regularly visit a Drupal-powered website where we do everything through the event system. It works very well - events are displayed on the side and users can chime in on participation status, so we could use that as our calendar system later on. It also has stuff like user blogging... just something to think about.
Regarding SaaS: There are a number of web clients for iCalendar, actually, though it's a matter of finding one that supports timelines. Or not. We only need one person to review the timelines for this particular event anyway.

I was looking at Drupal actually, that seemed like it would be a decent sort of CMS if we were to go that route. I think that supports forums too, so we'd have an all-in-one sort of arrangement going on, unless you'd want separate IPB/phpBB boards instead. I don't know if it'd have the same sort of integration as a Drupal board but I don't know how big of a deal that is.

I've used Drupal's own forum system before. It honestly kinda sucks compared to the more widely used solutions, so we'd probably need to look into integrating other forum software.

A cursory search of Drupals module repo - assuming modules are what I want here - brings up what look like IPB and phpBB integration modules so we could probably use one of those if we take the Drupal+new board route.
Of course that doesn't solve the issue of how we're going to get all the old stuff from here onto any new board without triggering Proboards ToS Killbots, if we do decide on a new board. If we take that option it would probably mean eventually losing the old board unless there's some way we can wget the entire board without anybody noticing.
