It is down. And it's pretty safe to say that the network's going to go down at least once every 36 hours if you go on how the past week has gone.

As of 2:00 PM EDT... the network is still down.
ADDENDUM: As of 2:11 PM EDT (maybe earlier as well), the network is up.

Hasn't actually been down at all today or last night, so I think you might have been experiencing problems. It was certainly good up to 3am as I was on FFXI until then, and after, well, there's no mass ping-timeouts in the logs. :S

In any case for some reason or other I wasn't able to connect for a number of hours, so I have no idea what was going on there

What errors was X-Chat reporting? Anything like "Connection Refused", "No Route To Host" or "Timeout"?
If it was "No route To Host" then it could have been a fault between your ISP and my ISP, a downed router or something. :s
